WZZA Radio, a division of Muscle Shoals Broadcasting, Inc., began broadcasting on July 4th, 1972. The station was founded, owned, and operated by Robert “Bob” Carl Bailey who, along with his wife Odessa, established a voice for the Black Community of Northwest Alabama. WZZA answered an unmet need for entertainment along with education and enlightenment (dubbed “info-tainment”) for an audience that had long been underserved.

Known as the “Soul of the Shoals”, WZZA Radio not only provides programming that is informative and entertaining, but serves as a catalyst for action in the areas of health, education, finance, politics and voting. The public service performed by WZZA Radio surpasses any other offered in the Muscle Shoals area and includes public affairs programming that provides voter education and encourages registration, teaches economic empowerment, raises public awareness about health challenges disproportionately affecting Black people, presents an annual Sickle Cell Anemia Radio-thon, and serves as a forum for discussion of the many issues of particular interest to African Americans.

Today, WZZA continues to be the only locally owned and programmed urban formatted radio station in the market.
