Naming tidbit

[edit]

We had to decide which title to choose since the Taiwan Open is and has been used for other tournaments. Hence the reason Taiwan Open is a disambiguation page. After sever conversations we had tentatively agreed to Taiwan Open (Kaohsiung) since it's very descriptive of the event name and the city it's played in. See user talk 333-blu: Taiwan Open and also Talk:Taipei WTA Ladies Open: Another Taiwan Open. I'm not saying it's 100% etched in stone, but please discuss before attempting to change the title to something else. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:49, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fyunck, my point was coherency: it makes no sense to have one tennis tournament bracketed (tennis) then another tennis tournament bracketed (Kaohsiung). That only adds/extends confusion. So if "(Kaohsiung)" stays then "(tennis)" has to go Loginnigol (talk) 21:36, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can see, we don't have a tournament called Taiwan Open (tennis). Usually we we only add the (tennis) 'IF' there is a golf or other tournament that goes by the same name. The problem is in tennis, we have three events that often get called the Taiwan Open by outside sources. So calling one of them "Taiwan Open (tennis)" doesn't help us very much. We even set up the Taiwan Open disambiguation page to cover this contingency. We felt this one needed to be even more fine tuned. Otherwise, since this event came first, it should have been the one that got the title Taiwan Open (tennis) as it was called this back in 1992 or in 1989. This seems to not be a good "fine tuning" as you called it. What is done seems to be that the location name (Taipei) is put in the bracket regardless and then you went shopping around for reasons to justify it. That approach yealds misleading results as a reader is now misled to believe there is a concurrent Taiwan Open outside of Taipei. So I see no reason to put place name in there in this instance out of some abstract editor desire to streamline with most of tournaments whose name has city instead of country in it. There sbould be room for exceptions. Otherwisde you might as well edit the major's title to "Wimbledon (London)". Loginnigol (talk) 17:25, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What would you suggest? We can't call it "Taiwan Open" since multiple tournaments are known by that name, and the date bracket looked very awkward. I had thought of "Taiwan Open International", but it might not always be an international level event. @Loginnigol:What about "WTA Taiwan Open", which uses no brackets at all?
