WMSG - disambiguation

[edit]

I searched WMSG, thinking it would lead me (either directly, or via a disambiguation page) to the [[1]] page .. Instead it linked me to [[2]] page, which is not a disambiguation page right now but just a page describing a radio station in Maryland.

That same page also says, near the top, "WMSG can also mean Western Mobile Support Group, a British traffic police unit."

So maybe we need to create a Disambiguation page for "WMSG" ?

We should move the current content to another link (say: [[3]] ? or what is the best way to 'format' the name? I am not right now able to spend too much time looking for the proper way...), then make the [[4]] page a "disambiguation page", linking to the various expansions (WMSG_radio_station, World_Mind_Sports_Games, etc.)

An example of disambiguation page is the one for "EGC" (so you can view how it's done)

Thanks in advance if someone can do this (right now I can't : I'm about to get back to work and will need time and experience to find out 1) the best way to rename the page 2) the proper way to then find former links to that page and change them to links to the renamed page 3) find out if doing this may break something else? like some (hypothetical) automated "list of radio stations", etc... In other words, I need someone with experience to do it, or to hint me as to where I can find a full procedure to properly do it myself ^^)

Thanks in advance! --Edhel-Dil (talk) 16:21, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No disambig page is needed cause there is no page for "Western Mobile Support Group" and only one page for "World Mind Sports Games" (which doesn't use "WMSG" as an abbreviation). The link for "World Mind Sports Games" can be added to the hatlink. - NeutralHomerTalk19:26, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks! It does work like this, until there is (maybe) more definitions added to this acronym.
But I still have a question: what is the deciding factor to choose the "main" definition attached to an acronym? (is an Atlanta radio more important than the World Mind Sports Game? And who is to decide? Is there a guideline? I do understand that here, the page "wmsg" was for the radio and the World Mind Sports Games was in a page with the full name, so it'd be quite some work to swap them, but I'm wondering what is the "best practice" in those cases...)Edhel-Dil (talk) 16:49, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the reason they put everything on one page was so only one page was needed. If, as you pointed out, more definitions come up, then yeah, we will probably have to make a disambig page, but for now, I think everything is cool. I also think the reason they put the radio station first is because the one hatlink doesn't link to a page, the other is only from 2008...so hatlinks are better in this case. If the World Mind Sports Games was an ongoing (yearly) event, then I could see the need for a disambig. See WWDC for an example of what I am talking about there. - NeutralHomerTalk20:12, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification (which i just saw... I seldom log in) :) But recently they seem to have agreed on making the next installment (it is not to be a yearly, but a "every 4 years" (and at that year's Olympic site) event). Maybe this is now (well, once we have a sure website to refer to) a good time to edit the related World Mind Sports Games page and maybe turn this WMSG into a desambiguation one ? I will let more senior users (like you) decide if it's the case. Edhel-Dil (talk) 11:28, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
