Notability
[edit]Ages Ago wasn't just his first hit with the German Reeds, it was simply his first big hit. He had had financially successful shows before, but 350 performances was a smash hit in pre-Pinafore days. -- Ssilvers 23:20, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Big hit, aye, but most of his burlesques did very well also. Adam Cuerden talk 23:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Problems with this article
[edit]This isn't a bibliography. The word "bibliography" is derived from the Greek word for book. A bibliography would list the works as published (publisher, date and place of publication). Aside from the first two items, everything listed is a dramatic work, and we already have another List of W. S. Gilbert dramatic works.
I could see two reasonable improvements. One would be to turn this article into an actual bibliography. The other would be to merge this and the other list, with the combined article being called something like List of W. S. Gilbert works.
This article already lists the majority of his dramatic works. By adding the few that are missing, plus a few indicative details (theatre, date), the List of W. S. Gilbert dramatic works would become redundant. Alternatively, the one-line descriptions in this article could be easily added to the earlier list. Either way, we have two heavily overlapping lists. - I would rather add more bibliographic info, especially of G's most notable works. I use this as a list of the most important Gilbert works and use the redlinks in it to help me decide which works to write articles for next. But can you add more info re: important Gilbert works other than plays that are not yet listed? -- Ssilvers 21:19, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
