'Vostok' Translation

[edit]

I'm not a speaker of Russian so I don't know myself, but in one of his articles James Oberg says that although 'Vostok' was translated in the West as 'East', a better meaning is 'the direction of Sunrise', more closely equivalent to the word 'Orient'. 'Vostok' and 'Voskhod' obviously derive from the same root, the suffix '-hod' just is an indication of movement, therefore 'Sunrise'. CFLeon (talk) 19:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I acknowledge that it has been years since your comment, but I propose we change the translation to "Dawn". Zoozoor (talk) 17:45, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, after searching Russian dictionaries, I believe that "Orient" is the best translation. Zoozoor (talk) 17:49, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

dogs

[edit]

This page talks about the space dogs and gives impression as if Korabl-Sputnik 2 was the first to orbit them but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika obviously did before — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.87.58.80 (talk) 21:13, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
