User Edit grammar 04/26/07

Does anyone have any objection to my changing the first line to adopt more of a "world grammar speaking tone?" I don't say this with any ill-intent. It's not my intention to offend. Specifically, I'd like the phrase "...a yacht race around the world" to read either, "is a race of yachts circumnavigating the globe," or "races all of the way around the world." or "Every four years the Volvo Ocean Race races yachts around the globe." - I'm open to ideas. It just seems to throw a lot of words into a not very readable sentence. Again, correct me if I'm wrong. If this seems fine, so state and I'll leave it alone. I think the readability could be increased significantly. If nobody has any objections, I would like to re-word with the article towards the same end-result. I would, of course, end the passive speech, parenthetical notation, appositives, and questions.--Legomancer 01:34, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Infobox

Propose adding a infobox to the top of the article to make it easier for people to see key data/information about the race: something similar to >>>

If anyone has any thoughts/ideas - do start posting them here, anything I have missed, etc - (and if anyone knows of a infobox template we could use instead of the generic one - that would be excellent - as I still can't find my way around the wikipedia help files!)

I am also going to volunteer to re-write the top two paragraphs to update it with the latest information (such as re-writing the "held every four years - until upcoming edition which will start after just 3-year break." line), as I think readers could get quite 'bogged down' in it, and be discouraged about reading on further down the page. In principle, I agree with idea to add an Infobox, perhaps some that is used on other articles on yachting races, if there is such Infobox template?Jdjerich (talk) 17:48, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, there is no template for yachting races, and they arent in use on any other yachting race articles that I can see, perhaps a new template needs creating? (Frammy7 (talk) 09:08, 20 August 2008 (UTC))

Page split into different pages for each race

Suggestion for the truly bored stumbling across this page- make seperate pages for each edition of the race, and reduce the 05-06 stuff to just a summary on here, so that the (hopefully forthcoming) detail on the 08-09 race doesn't cause this page to implode under its gravitational and form a small star.

Seems to be every third year from now on. 2005-2006, 2008-2009, ... So the very first sentences is not correct anymore.

I would like to suggest combining the previous races and previous winners boxes into a single box - as one would seem the obvious format (to me).

Also would it be good to add a "For the most recent edition of this event" link at the top of the page (similar to the one on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_to_Hobart_Yacht_Race) ? Also the image needs to be changed - as it currently shows one for the 08-09 race (which should be moved to the 08-09 page?), not the Volvo Ocean Race generally.

Thoughts welcome - as I think it would be good to get a discussion going here, rather than everyone doing separate bits with no coordination or general consensus. Are we allowed to put the Volvo Ocean Race template at the top of the page at all? just maybe being at the bottom people will miss it and not realise there is a separate page for each race?

It might be a bit long in its current state - but I would suggest removing the 'Designer' and 'Builder' columns, as they are lacking data, and anyone who wanted to know that info could go to the page specific to each year. With those 2 removed I think it could work being one box rather than two + I think it would be easier to look at then. (Frammy7 (talk) 15:50, 23 October 2008 (UTC))
