New York Times article
[edit]The NYT ran an article on this in 2009 called "A Sport Erupts on a Live Volcano in Nicaragua". [1]
Live volcanoes most likely require surfing down the outside of the volcano. Volcano surfing can be done inside the crater on extinct volcanoes like Jeju-do, South Korea. [2]
I once read somewhere that Hawaiians used to surf down volcanoes using long wooden boards but I can't find the reference.
And while not technically sliding down a volcano, there was the Hawaiian surfer C.J. Kanuha who attempted to surf ocean waves caused from an erupting volcano. The article does not state if he actually caught a wave, but it is interesting considering the semantics of "Volcano Surfing" [3] Aaauuuoooo (talk) 06:58, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
