Claim about Vladimir having raided Finland
[edit]The article claims Vladimir to have raided Finland in 1042. This is incorrect based on the following:
- Identification of "Yam", as mentioned in the chronicle as his opponents, has not necessarily been the same as "Yem" that was used about Finns in later chronicles. The "Yam" never appears anywhere else.
- The chronicle does not say that he raided Finland. The entry in total is as follows:
- In year 6550 (1042) Vladimir, son of Yaroslav battled the Yam and won them.
If the "Yam" were the Finns, this can have meant either that he went against intruding Finns (who are known to have attacked Novgorodian area three times according to Russian chronicles) or that he actually went to Finland. However, the first known chronicle entry about a Novgorodian attack to Finland is only from 1191, and even then Russians were assisted by Karelians. In any case, claiming Vladimir to have made an attack to Finland is speculation and needs to be fixed. --Drieakko 07:25, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
