What does Mailefihi mean? Is fihi a variant of Fisi or Fiji? Does it mean Maile who went to Fiji? Why Iam asking is because Maile Latamai Finau was a Tongan chief who came to Fiji with his followers in the 1700s to 1800s and settled in Sigatoka, Nadroga. The war fort that he built is called Tavuni (Tapuni). His descendants still live in the villages of Malevu, Naroro, Korotogo and Cuvu in Nadroga, Waicoba in the highlands of Navosa and Vatutu and Waqadra in Nadi. The title of their current chief is Tuipelehake. Hope someone can shed some light. There is a page I have started on Tavuni Hill Fort.

maile: a fern, fihi: tangle. Tangled fern; to release its smell better. No relation to Fiji. But then, of course, there were so many relationships between Tonga and Fiji in the 18th and 19th century, you never know what has happened. --Tauʻolunga 05:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
