[edit]I wonder if there's also a relation to the 100th anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens (100th anniv celebrations from 2008-2009 season to 2009-2010 season). Didn't the Habs also play in the Victoria arena? 76.66.198.171 (talk) 16:00, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
- It is possible that they may have played or practiced there as the rink was not torn down until the 1930s. There does not appear to be any public record of it, however. The Cup was commissioned as part of the IIHF centennial, not the Canadiens centennial. Alaney2k (talk) 00:47, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Name of the cup
[edit]I find the naming to be absolutely ridiculous, the arena which the trophy is supposeofly named after is in fact named in honour of Queen Victoria. So logically one would conclude that the trophy the Victoria cup, is named after queen Victoria. This should be noted in the article. And dont even get me started on the very un-transparent selection of the nhl team that competes for the cup each year, no where in this article does it say how the team is chosen. As well that there is already a victoria cup that predates this (for harness racing). The trophy is a marketing gimmic and a joke (pardon my forum talk) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.157.49.229 (talk) 00:03, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
- The trophy honours the first game, not the Queen. The Cup is not named after the Queen. I've added information about the NHL selection as much as is available. It will have to do for now, as there is over six months to go. Alaney2k (talk) 00:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Proposed move

The result of the move request was: page moved. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:49, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Victoria Cup → Victoria Cup (ice hockey) —
I think this page should be moved to Victoria Cup (ice hockey) and then a disambiguation page created for all three Victoria Cups (ice hockey, rugby and harness racing) on the current Victoria Cup page. Unfortunately the new page exists already (it seems that this article WAS at that page but was moved here at some point) but it is essentially an empty redirect page for this page, so it shouldn't cause too many problems but we may need an administrator. Alternatively "ice hockey" could be hyphenated to Victoria Cup (ice-hockey) but that would be equally incorrect.

- support proposal as made. I've notified the wp:hockey project. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 17:39, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment While the other two events are notable, they don't have the international scope this one does which means its probably the primary topic. That being said, I have no real opinion one way or the other. -DJSasso (talk) 17:40, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Like you said, -probably-. Google reports 13,200 for hockey and "Victoria Cup", 11,700 for rugby and "Victoria Cup" and 6,140 for horse and "Victoria Cup". This is probably a reasonable measure of primacy on the web. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 17:47, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support. I don't think the hockey tournament has primacy at this point. Allowing the main title to serve as the dab page is ideal here. Resolute 18:04, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support AS much as I want the hockey trophy to become a huge deal, its not there yet and I would be easily convinced the other two Victoria Cups are just as notable as the hockey one. Kaiser matias (talk) 18:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment and Amend proposal. I've created a usable disambiguation page at Victoria Cup (disambiguation). We can move that to Victoria Cup if consensus wants it.ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 19:20, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
