Family Name and Town Name "Vian"

[edit]

My last name is Vian, and in my family history, my grandparents and great-grandparents of that name came to Alberta, Canada, from Kansas and Oklahoma. When my father visited the town, he was able to verify that some people with his last name had lived there until recently. The origin of the name, according to family and internet-based records, is from Cornwall, in Britain, such that the family tree descends from a British soldier, a Vian, who came to America in the service of England, during the Revolutionary War. However, he stayed. I don't know if there is an association between our family name, and the name of Vian, Oklahoma, but it is tempting to suspect so. Big Vian Creek? If it was really French, that should be Gross Vian. Janice Vian, Ph.D. (talk) 23:27, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Very interesting, Janice Vian. I suspect that throughout history many people from Britain came to the US, but some of them were originally from France. I was going to say that Vian is located in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, but the article mentions that immediately. Good luck with researching your family name.
