Historic Central Business District
[edit]A minor point, perhaps, but I don't think it's accurate to say "Vestal's historic central business district is located along three blocks of Front Street, still lined with small shops." (last sentence of history section.) It seems too optimistic. It's lined with empty shops, plus shops repurposed as church meeting halls, town government offices, an art studio, and some service-sector storefronts (plumbing, hairstyling). There are fewer proper shops & restaurants now than there were in the early 90s --Jdimpson (talk) 13:02, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
- A sad, but accurate, depiction. Please feel free to make the change yourself. Nimur (talk) 18:21, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Plaza Store Directory
[edit]Well, its pretty cool that a representative of the City of Binghamton as discovered wikipedia, but don't you think its a bit much to list all the mundane chain stores found in nearby plazas. As an estranged area native, its actually quite embarassing. List unique qualities about the area, don't promote cookie cutter mediocrity. Slightly related: an unaccredited college listed in Binghamton?? REFERENCE whois lookup: City of Binghamton TWTC-CB-01 (NET-64-132-57-208-1) ccwaters 8 July 2005 19:17 (UTC)
- Sadly, thanks to "Uncle" Barry Newman, most of the local flavor has been squashed in the name of rapid growth and the general strip-mallification of suburban America24.24.95.18 02:57, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- The implication that Vestal didn't become an area shopping destination until the 1990s is erroneous. I grew up in Binghamton; the "Parkway Plaza" was originally the "Vestal Plaza" and has been there at least as far back as the early 1970s. The parkway was already lined with retail outlets and restaurants back then, and was a major shopping destination in the 70s. I used to take guitar lessons at a music store on the vestal Parkway called "The Guitar Center" -- owned by local jazz guitarist Enrico Zizzi -- which was there long before the "Guitar Center" chain came into the area.
- At any rate, retail was bustling in Vestal at least a couple of decades before the 1990s.

Vestal Center, Vestal Corner....
[edit]These little sidestreets off of 26 is Vestal Center: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=vestal,+ny&ll=42.033747,-76.017312&spn=0.003626,0.007522&t=k&hl=en Now where is Vestal Corner? If Vestal Center borders PA, then Vestal Corner could not be south of Vestal Center. Something is not right in the article. Correct me if I wrong but the Hamlet of Vestal Center is just that little development, but in a broader common usage "Vestal Center" is just another way of saying southern Vestal ("Go south on 26 and make a ..."). ccwaters 22:40, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- There's a lot of map confusion about this. As far as I know, there is no Vestal Corner. There's Vestal Center, and south of that there's South Vestal (right at the border). Both used to have post offices. -newkai | talk | contribs 07:07, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
neighborhood listings
[edit]The word "hamlet" had been used by someone to describe almost every neighborhood. I've replaced them with the word neighborhood. If someone can give me a good reason why they should be called hamlets I won't object, but it seems absurd. ---whisperednumber 8/19/06 12:18am
- See Neighbourhood and Hamlet (place) and Administrative divisions of New York. ccwaters 12:56, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'll switch them back. Although, since it has no legal meaning, I wonder why anyone bothers with the distinction. ---whisperednumber 8 August 2006, 9:19 pm
Vestal Parkway Photo
[edit]I'm all for removing the picture of a Target sign and power line. This could be any American suburb. Why not remove it and perhaps show a creek in South Vestal, or a community event, or a building on the University campus?
If the proponents of suburban sprawl must have their creation on Vestal's page, then I guess I might settle for a better looking retail block.
