Topic
[edit]Automotive and trailer brakes. For a general article about other types of brakes (i.e. for ships, planes and so on), see brake.
Proposed merger
[edit]- Oppose (for the reasons cited)
I'd oppose trying to bring disc brake and drum brake together. There's too much content to merge; a combined page would be 30k and I don't see any great overlap in the two articles. --DeLarge 17:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

- I oppose. The article would be too long, and readers searching information about drum brakes would have difficulties to find it in an ocean of informations concerning other brakes systems.84.140.5.198 13:26, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose for the reasons cited. However, I think the advantages and disadvantages sections in drum brake should be merged since it compares disk and drum brakes. Leedeth 22:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- I oppose for the reasons already cited.
- Support. Both disc brakes and drum brakes in practice, function exclusivley for vehicles. Also both articles have a fair bit of overlap. It would make sense to group the articles. Furthermore, according to WP:MM, articles shouldn't be merged or not merged purely to avoiding having lengthy articles, they should be merged based on article context and on suitability. - Oppose True, but it is also true that when a single article gets too long, the advice is to split it into sub-articles with a summary top level article. A comprehensive article on 'Vehicle Brakes' should cover many more things than just disc and drum brakes for cars, but would immediately be too long to keep without splitting. Therefore keep, and probably expand Vehicle brake as a comprehensive summary article, which it is not at present, and leave the sub-articles where they are. Suggested additions to Vehicle brake include: Bicycle brakes, which although functioning in much the same way are not covered by Disc brake (see Bicycle brake systems); Train brakes, which seem to have several sub-categories of their own (see Brake (railway)); Aircraft brakes, which are probably all variations on road vehicle braking systems, but what about Air brakes? Aren't they a kind of vehicle braking?; Finally there are of course other kinds of automotive braking as well, for example Band brakes as used on the Ford Model T. There's a nice job there for someone to work out a structure for that little lot!
- These suggestions would also mean exapnding the top level article Brake to cover material other than vehicle brakes - brakes on machinery (e.g. Lathes and Elevators) being the most obvious omission from that article. 4u1e 09:30, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose... A bit of an excessive generalization, but this would be like combining sprockets and gears. ~Gertlex 03:47, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- oppose drum brake is not limited to be a vehicle brake, so there is nothing to merge. -- 80.145.14.57 13:08, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- OPPOSE--The users searching for drum brakes may not find it in the main article plus other reasons cited above. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.36.235.200 (talk) 09:49, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
