- The history of Veer Bhai Kotwal is documented through varriuos docuements and records of the Indian Govt during the British rule . Most of these files are not online but we have scanned copies from the Govt archives which can be used as external links .Sajjad1971 (talk) 12:46, 19 June 2014 (UTC) Sajjad1971

- Wikipedia page is not valid as a source. Mention of Azad Dasta and Kotwal there was not cited to any source. --Bejnar (talk) 16:12, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- The article claims that Kotwal founded the Azad Dasta, that is in contradiction to this website which says: Jayaprakash escaped to Nepal and organized a guerilla army called the “Azad Dasta”. Jayaprakash and Ram Manohar Lohia were captured briefly but were rescued by the Azad Dasta members, who set fire to a hut to distract the guards. Both freedom fighters escaped to Bihar. and this non-governmental Indian Post source. --Bejnar (talk) 16:12, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- Of the several books that I checked that mention Azad Dasta, none have any reference to Kotwal; this includes Freedom fighters of India, Indian Heritage and Culture, Our Leaders (Childrens Book Trust), and Decolonizing Anarchism: An Antiauthoritarian History of India's Liberation Struggle. --Bejnar (talk) 19:26, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- This edit summary lists karjathistory.hpage.co.in/azad-dasta_41253883.html as a source. However, hpage.co.in belongs to a German company, ASNetworks GmbH, that allows registered members to create their own free web page. There is no indication that pages at karjathistory.hpage.co.in have any reliability. --Bejnar (talk) 19:26, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Name
[edit]"Hutatma" means "martyr" as a title. "Bhai" is a sobriquet. What is "Veer"? Is it short for "Vithal"? --Bejnar (talk) 21:32, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
The person called "Hutatma Bhai Kotwal" seems to be the same as "Vithal Laxman Kotwal", so the problem with sources may be from variations in what he is called. This movie magazine says Now, film maker F.M. Illyas ( 'Arjun' fame) is all set to make a film on the life of Hutatma Bhai Kotwal. Known for his selfless service to the society in the capacity of a lawyer, his work has been highly appreciated by people from Maharashtra. Bhai Kotwal was known for his free legal service to poor farmers, who were indebted and harassed by moneylenders. His sacrifice while fighting against the Britishers is also known to all. Now, through this film, the new generation will come to know about his contribution to the society. --Bejnar (talk) 20:28, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
In the book Quit India revolution: the ethos of its central direction by K. K. Chaudhari (1996), Kotwal is discussed on pages 172 and 309. As a reference, the author cites Chavan, S. T. (1989). Bharatiya Swatantrya Sangramatil Jhunjhar Krantiveer: Hutatma Bhai Kotwal. Bombay: Veer Kotwal Yuvak Mandal., which I have been unable to find. I have not even found a listing of Chavan's book in an online catalog, such as that of the National Library of India or University of Mumbai. Mumbai Univ. does have a sketchy listing for Srivastava, Ramlal. Hutatma Kotwal. Neral: Kotwal Wadi Trust., no year of publication or length. --Bejnar (talk) 20:28, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Statue
[edit]Commons has several pictures of the statue of Kotwal. Category:Hutatma kotwal monument. Which one is the most appropriate? There seems to be a similar statue of him in the Municipal Garden of Matheran, See here, of which no one has yet taken a picture for the commons. --Bejnar (talk) 21:44, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
