Hi,

Some bot has asked me to justify re-inserting the YouTube Link To Javier Livas on Variety. Well it's not been removed. So good for you. Re copyright: The point is this is an outstanding audiovisual presentation by a well-known Mexican Cybernetician. In cybernetics we've been waiting for this kind of thing for years. There's no commercial intent. He knows and is very pleased to have me insert this url to his work which is a clear description of the application of Asby's famous law concerning the counting of possible states. What more can I say?--Nick Green (talk) 22:47, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This question of multisets is interesting. I have quoted Ashby directly from page 124. But he did not use curly brackets. I can remove them, if that helps. How about a footnote stating that today mathematicians call these multisets with a wiki url to the topic multiset.--Nick Green (talk) 23:08, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok hopefully fixed now.--Nick Green (talk) 23:23, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Needs to explain or link to explanation of "control mechanism". Also generally it doesn't make sense.22:56, 12 December 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.153.90.203 (talk)

There is a problem with the example:

Thus, if the order of occurrence is ignored, the set {c, b, c, a, c, c, a, b, c, b, b, a} which contains twelve elements, contains only three distinct elements- a, b, c. Such a set will be said to have a variety of three elements.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set, members of a set should be unique, unlike a multiset. So {c, b, c, a, c, c, a, b, c, b, b, a} is a multiset, the set representation of this multiset is {a,b,c} which has cardinality (number of members) 3, equal to the variety.
