This article misleads and misses the broad case of Variable Reluctance sensors by only focusing on sensors used for rotational speed measurement (in automobiles) with a magnet attached to the spinning target. The general case is correctly touched on in the opening paragraph: "detects the change in presence or proximity of ferrous objects". A Variable Reluctance sensor does not require a permanent magnet as described in the "Construction" section.
