Lots and lots of Van Winkles

[edit]

I knew I'd find four or five in British Columbia; there was a settlement during the Cariboo Gold Rush called Van Winkle - today known as Stanley, and it was named after a previous gold-bearing bar in the Fraser Canyon, near Lytton (Van Winkle Flat is the surviving name on the map today for that location, but it was Van Winkle Bar in the old days), and it in turn was named for a famous gold-bearing bar in California of the same name. That location, curiously, doesn't turn up in GNIS, and those locations in California are down in San Bernardino and Monterey Counties, not in the gold rush areas (unless that would include Monterey County? - I don't know California history well). There are 45 entries across the US, though, but I'm not equipped or knowledgeable enough to know which are significant enough to either include here, or to have articles of their own....Skookum1 (talk) 23:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
