Anybody know where I can find census data for Van Nuys? --Jack Schitt 09:53, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- If you do a Google on 'Isaac Van Nuys' you'll find a lot of information. My English is not good enough to write a Wikipedia article about him...--82.92.243.35 19:27, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Fix This
This is not an encyclopedic article. It needs to be rewritten from top to bottom. I suggest it be deactivated or deleted in the meantime. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.34.188.214 (talk) 21:01, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- I completely agree that the article's tone is not encyclopedic. However the article shouldn't be deactivated. As soon as possible, someone needs to rewrite at stub because there must be something for the article. After that, it can be expanded in an encyclopedic manner. 97.79.10.188 (talk) 11:50, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Pronounciation?
A quick explanation of the pronounciation of "Van Nuys" (i.e., the way locals pronounce it, and not the original Dutch) would be helpful. Funnyhat 21:10, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
minor
Moved nicky sixx info. Not really encyclopedia level info. 66.92.217.194 18:08, 13 September 2007 (UTC)andyandy68
This article...
...is almost certainly a blatant copyright violation. It reads like a travel brochure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:51, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Doc, can you point to the most atrocious passages? pbp 04:55, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Start with "Look at the two photos of Van Nuys' first year—and then listen to what the Los Angeles Times wrote on February 23, 1911, the day after the Van Nuys town lot auction:", which is the wrong style for any encyclopedia, but worse, it sounds like it was lifted directly from a book or something. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 11:08, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- If you google ["van nuys" "classic boomerism"], it's all over the internet, but it's hard to tell who stole from who. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 11:17, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Challenge and delete
We need WP:Reliable sources for this article. What about getting them in here by June 1, 2013, lest the unsourced info be challenged and removed? GeorgeLouis (talk) 18:04, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Unless the material being challenged is something that could actually be disputed, it might work better if we encourage other editors to source some of the facts already present. That is what the needs sources template is for, isn't it? Why hasn't that been added to the til? --SchutteGod (talk) 20:08, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
- Quite a bit of the article has been rewritten, along with sources, so we don't have to worry so much any more. When needed, some of the individual sections might be flagged, but at this point I don't think it is necessary for the whole article. Others may disagree. Delano Park facts
Los Angeles city councilman Ernani Bernardi visited the Sylvan Park Elementary School Advisory Council in 1971 suggesting a Vest-Pocket park on a quarter-acre of land kitty-corner from the school. Among those present were the principal Gloria Kalnai (hope I have that spelled correctly), myself, Elma Flores and a teacher Elizabeth Cervantes. It was then that the community asked me to head up the project. I was and am honored but there is more to the story. This section of Van Nuys (van n-eyes) had been cut off from the rest of the community since the 19th Century. At that time a brick company built a company-town near their pit. Mexican families had lived on it for decades before discovering that it wasn't theirs. Over the years and through one generation after another, these families were holding on to their culture as best they could. Anyway, back to the story. Once a committee had been formed we raised more than $104,000 for the new park and an additional four acres were arranged by swapping a city parking lot to the parks & recreational department. I had the pleasure of planning the original layout. Fund raisers includes solicitation, street fairs and concerts. At first the community wanted the parked to be named after someone but when the city informed us that it couldn't be anyone alive they decided on Delano, a street that had been at the heart of this barrio. Shortly after the park was dedicated in June of 1973 our family moved a few miles west. The park has been improved since then to serve the community better. -- John C. several porn studios
regarding this diff; sure, probably Van Nuys is home to several porn studios. Probably every ten block square in the Valley is home to several porn studios. They also have a lot of raccoons. Is any of this notable? Without a source how can we be sure? Why not add the sentence to every neighborhood article in LA?— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 05:41, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
This source:
- Hoffman, Claire (January 12, 2007). "Porn studios raided to ensure adult-only casts". Los Angeles Times. Retrieved 29 January 2014.
doesn't support the statement cited to it because it talks about porn studios getting raided by cops in 2007. That makes it seem less likely that the sentence is true. This source:
- "MANTENNA – JAMES FRANCO'S X-RATED FAIL". SPIKE TV. Viacom Entertainment Group. Retrieved 29 January 2014.
is from Spike TV, which isn't reliable for anything. The remaining source obviously supports the statement, so let's just keep that one.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 13:43, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
When did Van Nuys become part of the city of Los Angeles?
The article should state when Van Nuys became part of the city of Los Angeles; so should History of the San Fernando Valley#Annexation. —Anomalocaris (talk) 06:46, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've added info about annexation to the History section. HollywoodCowboy (talk) 18:01, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Lake Balboa
In 2007, the boundaries of Van Nuys and Lake Balboa were changed by this action of the City Council so that all of Van Nuys west of the 405 freeway and south of Saticoy street- with the exception of Van Nuys Airport- are now part of Lake Balboa. This should be mentioned in the history section. Some implications:
- The LA Times map shows the boundaries before this change, so it's out of date and wrong.
- Ditto for the part of the Geography section referring to street boundaries, which is based on the above
- Of the "Notable locations", the Japanese Garden, the Sepulveda Dam- Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area and the Leo Magnus Cricket Complex are in Lake Balboa.
- Under "Education", Bassett Street Elementary School and Valley School are in Lake Balboa
- Under "Transportation, the Woodley Orange Line station is in Lake Balboa, and the Balboa station is almost 3 miles west of Van Nuys
Also, the misnamed "Property values" section should be removed as POV that's mostly unsupported by its references, as well as poor article structure (it shoud be addressed under "History". There's no doubt that concern about property values has been a major motivating factor in the trend toward parts of Van Nuys leaving it, but in the references themselves (which refer only to two parts of Van Nuys becoming Sherman Oaks- not to Lake Balboa or Valley Glen), this is only mentioned as assertions by opponents, and the section doesn't mention anything proponents said. Expand lead
Someone who knows about this area needs to make a proper lead, its been almost a year and there is a one line lead for a long article saying only its location and not saying any landmarks, institutions, sporting teams etc. MarkiPoli (talk) 17:37, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- You don't need to know the area. All an editor has to do is to read the article, note the essential points and write a new lead. Thanks! BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 19:31, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
population factoid
"it is the only neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley with a population of more than 136,443" it says in the lede -- and this is, apparently, the exact population as of the 2000 census. What is the purpose of putting this number here? Was it originally something like "the only neighborhood with more than 100,000 people" and someone changed it to be "more precise"? Unless someone has a specific justification for this I am going to remove it. --Jfruh (talk) 23:11, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
