This SPS-sourced section, a footnote at best to the history of the place, sticks out like a sore thumb and may have been added by the band or its supporters. As a violation of WP:DUE, a separate section is inappropriate in an FAC; a sentence or two in another, chronologically-appropriate section would suffice. All the best, Miniapolis 22:45, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
- Miniapolis, I added this piece of information since it was an interesting part of the house's history. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can better incorporate this information, since I am not able to find additional references to corroborate this source. As always, I appreciate your guidance and suggestions. -- West Virginian (talk) 18:14, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- As I mentioned above, it should be incorporated into the chronologically-appropriate section above. However, I'm not sure if WP:SPS applies: "Never (emphasis in original) use self-published sources as third-party sources about living people ... " All the best, Miniapolis 19:36, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Miniapolis, thank you for your response. I've gone ahead and removed that section, and will add information chronologically should I find another reference. -- West Virginian (talk) 01:37, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Royal land grant
User:West Virginian: The history of ownership of the Northern Neck tract, according to the W&M Quarterly source, can be summarised as below. Not all of this information needs to appear in your article; in particular, the details which I have italicised refer to a different, extended grant and are not relevant to your subject. The W&M source does not include any of the details of the South Branch Survey or the sale of land to Collins. I've included page refs, and I think there is sufficient detail for you to redraw the first part of the "Royal land grant" paragraph.
- 1649: the putative King Charles II grants the "Northern Neck" to a group of noblemen inc. Sir Thomas Culpeper. Because of the suspension of the English monarchy the grant has no legal force. (p. 222)
- 1660: the Restoration: Charles formally becomes king
- 1662: the "Northern Neck" grant is renewed, in the face of considerable opposition from the local people and from the state governor. (p. 222}
- 1669: Charles issues a revised grant, ordering the governor to submit to the new proprietors. (p. 222)
- 1672: Charles rejects a petition from his Virginia subjects, renews the original grant, and makes a new one in favour of the whole of the rest of Virginia in favour of Culpeper and the earl of Arlington. (p. 223)
- 1681: After much further dispute, Arlington sells his share of the extended grant to Culpeper, who in 1684 transfers ownership back to the king in exchange for an annual pension of £600. (p. 224)
- 1688: Culpeper having bought out the remaining "Northern Neck" proprietors, receives a new charter for these lands from King James II. (p. 224)
- 1690: After Culpeper's death, rights to the land pass to his widow, Lady Marguritte, and daughter Lady Katherine Culpeper, the latter married to Thomas, the fifth Lord Fairfax who died in 1709. (p. 225)
- 1711: Marguritte dies, leaving Katherine as sole proprietor. (p. 226)
- 1722: Katherine's son, the sixth Lord Fairfax, assumes ownership after her death. He lived for a further 60 years. After his death in 1782 the grant of the Northern Neck was briefly renewed in favour of his son, the 7th baron, but the land was confiscated by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1786.(p. 226) Brianboulton (talk) 16:14, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
- Brianboulton, thank you for sharing this information with me here. I will finish drafting this paragraph over the next few days. As you know, this will affect at least ten other articles as well, so I look forward to your input and further review. Once again, thank you for bringing over this information from the W&M Quarterly! -- West Virginian (talk) 17:27, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
- I'd like to see the revised history paragraph before I resume the FAC review. Brianboulton (talk) 15:22, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
- Brianboulton, I was on leave for two weeks since our last discussion, so I will work on this this evening Eastern Standard Time. Thank you for your patience! -- West Virginian (talk) 14:44, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- Brianboulton, I'll notify you once these changes are made, and then I will re-nominate this article for FAC. I apologize for the inconvenience, but thank you for all your assistance! -- West Virginian (talk) 14:46, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- Brianboulton, I've incorporated this source and expanded the section regarding Lord Fairfax's acquisition of the land grant. Please let me know if you have any additional guidance or suggestions in the meantime. -- West Virginian (talk) 18:15, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- Brianboulton, would you be able to review the background regarding the Northern Neck Proprietary? I've incorporated all the information from the Quarterly; however, the Quarterly provides the erroneous year of 1722 as the year when Lord Fairfax inherits the proprietary since his mother died in 1719. I'd like to ensure that this article is good to go for a second Featured Article review process. Thank you again in advance! -- West Virginian (talk) 14:24, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
