The names of the wives of the Ottoman Sultans before conversion(Incomplete list)
[edit]I removed this list from the article. IMO it is barely related to this topic, which is Valide Sultan. The list of wives without sultans or other context is basically useless. Not to say that no source provided. Mukadderat (talk) 23:37, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Years
[edit]One really should add the years when each woman was Valide Sultan to this list! You always add the years for, example, queens and kings in other lists; that's what timelines are for! Now, one must follow the link to each sultan to see where in time they belong, so it would be more practical to simply add the years to when the had the title before each name! Just a thought! --85.226.45.179 (talk) 20:03, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have tried to remedie this. --85.226.45.179 (talk) 20:20, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Zibi Fer's Edits
[edit]These latest edits contradict what is written in other articles pertaining to Valide Sultans. Therefore, I'm reverting it. References are needed for this article. --Kansas Bear (talk) 21:38, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Bezmialem
[edit]Bezmialem, a Georgian said to have been a bath-attendant before entering the the imperial harem, was only fifteen when she gave birth to Abdulmecid. Just exactly who entered the imperial harem?? I believe I comprehend English quite well. The sentence does state she was a Georgian. --Kansas Bear (talk) 20:14, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, my mistake. I have already retracted. Mukadderat (talk) 20:55, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Title used since the Seljuk times
[edit]Valide Sultan was a title used since the Seljuk qnd early Ottoman times for the mothers of the Sultans. It did not came in use for the time for Suleiman I's mother Ayşe Hafsa Sultan. It was also used for those princes who had the title Sultan in both Seljuk and Ottoman times. Some of the references are given: [1] [2] [3]

- No, you misinterpret these sources. "Valide-i Sultan" means "mother of the sultan", not "sultan/queen mother" ; in the first book it refers to Mahpari Khatun.--Phso2 (talk) 19:06, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
I mean to say that it was the title Valide Sultan and Walida i Sultan are both the same and that all the sources indicate i have already mentioned. Retrieverlove (talk) 16:23, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- "Valide Sultan" and "Walida i Sultan" are not the same, in "Valide Sultan" sultan refers to the woman who bears the title, in "Walida i Sultan" sultan refers to the son of the woman who bears the title. Therefore it is wrong to say that "Valide Sultan was a title used since the Seljuk qnd early Ottoman times"--Phso2 (talk) 13:44, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
The list of Valide Sultans is a mess
[edit]Specifically with regards to names and backgrounds.
- The belief that Hafsa Sultan is the daughter of a Crimean Khan is outdated and no longer accepted by most historians
- There are several theories with regards to Nurbanu's background and her maiden name, none of which are generally accepted, so we don't know if her name really was Cecilia Venier-Baffo
- Safiye Sultan was almost certainly not Venetian, and we do not know her real name, the most accepted theory is that she was of Albanian origin
- Handan Sultan was most likely Bosnian, not Greek
- We don't know what Halime's original name was, even the name "Halime" itself is disputed — Preceding unsigned comment added by Le temps viendra (talk • contribs) 12:55, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- Turhan Hatice wasn't a "Ruthanian noblewoman" (none of these woman were noblewomen), she was either Russian or Ukrainian, and again, her original name is unknown
- We know virtually nothing about Aşub's origins, there's no way of knowing whether her name was Katarina and whether she was Serbian, although she certainly wasn't a noblewoman
- I do not have access to the source (which has been cited wrong in any case, The Bosphorus was written by John Freely, not Baker), but I'm certain that Evmania Voria wasn't Rabia Gülnuş's original name, as such a name does not even exist
- Saliha's origin and name are also unknown, and the sources for her being an ethnic Greek with the name of Alexandra are marked as unreliable on her article
