[edit]here it says out of 41 planes, 5 survived, but on the USS Hornet page, it says that 6 survived. Which was it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.161.41.63 (talk) 23:45, 21 May 2007

Details
[edit]VT-8's Alpha Detachment brought the very first TBF-1 aircraft, totalling 21 planes to Ford Island NAS. On June 3, 1942, Lt. Fieberling led a formation of 6 TBF's to Midway Island. On the morning of June 4, they took off from Midway Island and also encountered the enemy carrier group. Only one plane, piloted by Albert Earnest, made it back to Midway Island. His turret gunner, Jay Manning, was dead. The other crew member, Harry Ferrier, was knocked unconscious as a bullet grazed his skull.
On June 4, 1942, Torpedo Squadron Eight lost 45 men and 20 planes. The 21st plane, which Albert Earnest miraculously brought back to Midway, was literally a flying wreck. It is a marvel that it was able to fly at all. A photo exists somewhere on the internet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.217.131.161 (talk) 04:43, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I hastily added a sent, which i {{fact}}-tagged. My source is today's Talk of the Nation coverage; more should probably be added from that, along with a proper ref.
