Aryans entered India? Is there any reference to indicate that "the day of Uttarayana" is the day Aryans entered India? I ask because the entire Aryan invasion theory is now contested. If ancient Hindu literature does claim that Aryans came from outside (on Uttarayana day), I would like to know the reference. Or is this just a prevailing belief with no documented reference? This entry places too much emphasis on the correctness of the solstice based definition and the wrongness of the Rashi based definition (there is even a reference which talks about "erosion of scholarship and education over the ages"). I see this differently:

At some time in the past both definitions yielded correct semantic results. Due to precession of equinoxes the rashi based definition has fallen behind, but within the system of Hindu astronomy there is available a technique to account for and correct this drift - ayanamsha - which bridges the gap between the sayana and nirayana systems. Panchangas continue to stick with the uncorrected (nirayana) Rashi based definition and hence lag the actual reversal of direction of the Sun's movement by approximately 24 days.

I know this says the same thing but removes the focus on "right" and "wrong"; instead the above presents both definitions as part of a broader system of Hindu astronomy.

Austronomy Source Needed

[edit]

//The Surya Siddhanta defines Uttarāyaṇa (उत्तरायण, উত্তরায়ণ, ઉત્તરાયણ), or Uttarayan as the period between the Makara Sankranti (which currently occurs around January 14) and Karka Sankranti (which currently occurs around July 16).//

Any Astronomical source for this statement? That means from NASA, ISRO websites.--Tenkasi Subramanian (talk) 16:04, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of content from Ritual section

[edit]

Hi @Chilicave

I created a new section to cover some rituals associated with Uttarayana. I noticed you removed some of the information regarding the names used in the north/south of India. Although not directly related to rituals, I felt it provided some useful context for readers and propose re-adding this info.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Hi @Starlights99!
Adding the rituals section is definitely a noteworthy idea, but it would be appreciated if you could add a good reference or reliable source. Just going back to WP:Verifiability. Chilicave (talk) 15:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there @Starlights99!
In retrospect to your proposal, I would also like to add that is it necessary to add the other names of uttarayana in the ritual section or would it be better just to mention it briefly in the lead? I think keeping such information in the rituals section would require you to at least expand on the specific rituals carried out in the north or south. For that, you need evidentiary support. There is also a lot of overlap of these rituals mentioned in the Makar Sankranti article if you have a look... Chilicave (talk) 02:14, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Chilicave
I agree that the lead may be a better place for the naming conventions. However I disagree regarding expanding specific rituals. The naming convention is piece of information that will provide better context for the readers, and there's no specific requirement to expand on it, so that shouldn't be a reason to not include it.
I'll move the naming convention to the lead once I've found a reliable source for this. If you want to expand on the north/south rituals then perhaps we can work together on this?
Thanks,

@Starlights99
I see your point.
Sure, why not? Let me know how you would like to approach this. Perhaps, you can collect information about northern rituals, and I, the latter? Chilicave (talk) 13:55, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Chilicave
Sounds good. I've left a message on your talk page. We can keep plans/discussions there and leave the article talk page for content that's in the article.
Thanks!
