Earth Solar Orbit cycle discoveries

[edit]

The March 2007 Analog refers to Le Verrier's discovery of the 41,000 year cycle for variation in the earth's tilt from 22.2 to 24.5 degrees. And his discovery of the 100,000 year cycle in the earth's orbital eccentricity. They are linked in the article to the ice age cycle based on Ruddiman's hypothesis that these variations along with a third cycle 26,000 year cycle discovered by a country man, d' Alembert. I don't know of an online source, I'm referring to real paper and print. Mulp 07:21, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discoverer of Neptune, yes.

[edit]

168 years have passed, and the discovery of Neptune is apparently still a feud between the British and the French.

The Wikipedia pages in English credit either Adams or (sigh) Galle as discoverer. Le Verrier is cited for "his role in the discovery of" or by (gasp) "assisting Galle in discovering" Neptune. The Wikipedia pages in French name Le Verrier as sole discoverer.

Note that back at the time of the discovery, both Adams and Galle credited Le Verrier. Adams knew his solution was not as good as Le Verrier's, and didn't claim Neptune as his achievement. As for Galle, he never wanted any credit, rightly stating that he had simply pointed the telescope where Le Verrier told him to point.

Let it go, England. The credit is Le Verrier's alone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.250.232.154 (talk) 03:54, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"predicting the existence and position of Neptune using only mathematics."

[edit]

I think this sentence is false. In addition to mathematics, Le Verrier's prediction relied on (1) astronomical observations (as is mentioned later in the article) and (2) the claim that Newtonian celestial mechanics is a roughly correct physical theory. Does anybody have an objection to removing the very end of this sentence so that it ends with "predicting the existence and position of Neptune"? DylPickle666 (talk) 03:48, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
