sheffield student union
Is SU really the largest union in the country? I'm pretty sure that there are other, bigger unions, not just in terms of of membership but also turnover, no. of societies and no. of venues.
If i can find any evidence to the contrary, I will correct this.
- It may have the largest turnover, most societies or largest building, but I'm sure it doesn't have the largest membership - Sheffield Uni is far from being the largest in the country, and isn't even the largest in Sheffield! Warofdreams talk 09:39, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
I know this isn't exactly evidence, but it's a "fact" that I was constantly reminded of during my time there, along with the other apocryphal-sounding "Sheffield is the friendliest city in Britain - they did a survey" statistic.
That may stem from the fact that Sheffield has been statistically the safest city in the country crime-wise for the past three years.
Top ten claims
Looking at the University's claims [1] - well, there are lies, damn lies and statistics. What they don't say in that the Times Good University Guide actually rated them 21st in 2005. [2]. Average Earthman 16:18, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Visual Identity and Facelift
I have removed this paragraph from the article for several reasons. The alleged cost of the new visual identity is unsubstantiated and IMHO does not need to be included in the article, especially not under the heading 'Reputation.' Furthermore all claims made in the removed paragraph are unsourced. Rednaxela 21:41, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Supertram
Yes, University of Sheffield is a uni, not a tram stop, but it has it's own tram stop, and as such ought to be labelled and be within the [[category:Sheffield Supertram stops]]
- I've reverted your edits as they were off topic and badly formatted.
- You can contribute to the tram stop list on Sheffield Supertram, which is complete.
- Don't forget to sign your comments.
- The [(University of Sheffield]] article is about the university, Sheffield Supertram is about the tram system. You can add a properly formatted section on transport maybe with details of the influence of the tram on the university. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons 17:41, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- How is adding a catagory "badly formatted"? There is (was) a [category:Sheffield Supertram stops], which currently seems to have no content. I was simply trying to update this. - any content submitted is viewable and amendable by our peers. Your contributions do not belong to you, don't contribute if you do not want to see them modified. You have asked if the course of action you are taking was an option on the Sheffield Project page, where the other members agreed with the decision I am implementing now. If you have a problem with the decision or do not understand why, use the Project's talk page. Taking action in your own hands will more than likely result in revert: actions are the result of concensus. lso, I didn't delete the category...Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons 19:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Shouldn't 'Faculty' refer to the 1,100 professors and lecturers (e.g. the teaching staff), rather than all the staff?
- Having just looked the word up in the dictionary, it should. Fixed.
The Raynor Lounge
I don't believe the Raynor Lounge is a bar. It is a bookable room with its own bar but you need a specific reason to go in there and it is locked when not in use so it isn't the same as Bar One and The Interval. (Pally01 23:51, 5 February 2006 (UTC))
- Raynor Lounge is open as a regualar bar for most nights and most events. It is also bookable, and only then is it closed to other stdents, so it is a regualar student bar. L.J.Skinnersomething to say? 17:32, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- So, it is open sometimes and closed sometimes. When it is booked it is closed to other students. How does this make it like the other two? (Quentin X 19:17, 15 November 2006 (UTC))
- No, it is open to all students unless booked, so it acts as an overspill bar to Bar 1, but it does have it's own bar area and dedicated bar staff, plus it's own DJ booth, and hence often (indeed usually) plays different music to Bar 1. The preceding comment contained scenes of a violent or sexual nature, and should not have been viewed by young children. L.J.SkinnerWOT? 20:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sorry. It would be a regular bar if it was open the same as Bar One and The Interval. It can be booked seven nights a week, 52 weeks a year and as such would not be open to students. When it is booked there is a security guard on the door. It may act as an overspill and have its own bar and DJ booth (it's bloody cramped in there when there are more than three people) but it cannot be regarded the same as it is a bookable room. Maybe we could write something to that effect? (Quentin X 20:48, 21 November 2006 (UTC))Go on. Give me a headache

University ratings
(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)
There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Clubs & Societies
I have (twice) added an item headed "Clubs & Societies" and a reference to the Sheffield Students Motor Club of which I was a member. Clubs & Societies were a very significant part of student life and deserve a mention. Both times the item has been deleted, is it possible to discover why and by whom?
- The history page tells you 'by whom'. It was this edit that removed the section yesterday. My own view is that any substantial changes, in particular deletions, should be discussed first. I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be a Clubs and Societies section myself. -- roundhouse 10:29, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- I think Ohconfucius, who is going round 'cleaning up' university pages with some zeal (and no prior discussion) to judge from his talk page, would say that the section should be in the Student Union article (which it is). He removed a lot of other stuff as well. -- roundhouse 10:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- I've put the Clubs & Societies stuff back. Frankly I'm amazed that there is no mention of any other clubs, an enormous amount of effort went into this sort of thing, there were masses of societies represented at the Freshers' fair.
Andy1971 12:09, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- There was a link to Route 57 amongst the material removed in this edit by Ohconfucius yesterday. It was under external links rather than refs. -- roundhouse 17:33, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- The notoriety of this club is probably the reason Mike0001 (talk) 15:49, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Nursing
There was an article in the Steel Press near the beginning of this term (Autumn 05) which said that all the nursing teaching in Sheffield was being transferred to Hallam. I want to change that last line of Location, but I don't know much about it. Does anyone know anything more? --Nathan 01:01, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
-Cool! Go Hallam! Magic Pickle 18:41, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yep. Nursing was dumped by the UofS, to the absolute disgust of the Nursing staff! Mike0001 10:03, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think it is appropriate to say it was "dumped" by the University. I had a scout around on the net, and it seems it wasn't the fault of the University - it was the health authority wanting a split of services between University and Hallam. See the article here. ~~ [Jam][talk] 10:12, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Correct - the University was quite disappointed to lose the nursing SheffGruff 19:55, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Name of the University
Rather than "University of Sheffield" it is in fact "The University Of Sheffield" - this is how it's written on all the signs around the university, and on their website, and how it is supposed to be referred. Thoughts? Fragsta (talk) 20:46, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- That is the stylistic choice of the university. WP:COMMONNAME seems to suggest that someone wanting information about the university would put "University of Sheffield" into a search engine, not "The University Of Sheffield", so that is the convention that is followed. However, that is only my (limited) interpretation of the thing, and someone might be able to divulge the reasons why a bit further. ~~ [Jam][talk] 20:50, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- Fair point, I agree then. Fragsta (talk) 15:55, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
University of Sheffield student housing
I've created a new article University of Sheffield student housing, to merge all the residence halls to. I'm not affliated with the University, so I've probably made mistakes and overlooked things. Please help fix the article, thanks. Phlegm Rooster (talk) 19:54, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Students Union
Doesn't the students union own two off campus pubs, the Fox and Duck & also the Rising Sun in the Ranmoor area? SheffGruff (talk) 00:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
- I believe this is true, although I only know that via word of mouth. ~~ [Jam][talk] 00:31, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
- From http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/?pgid=65839&fs=n and http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/?pgid=65834&fs=b - "The applicant is SUSU Services Limited." (aka Sheffield University Students Union Services Limited). So yes, the Fox and Duck and the Rising Sun are officially owned by the Students Union. ~~ [Jam][talk] 00:38, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
The Rising Sun was sold off prior to June 2007 and is no longer owned or run by the Union of Students. The Fox & Duck in Broomhil is still owned and run by the Studdents' Union under their wholly owned subsidiary SUSU Services Ltd. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.167.50.44 (talk) 12:37, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Notable alumni
The Notable Alumni section is no place for so called "professional students". Reason one: an alumnus is a graduate, not a second year chemistry student. Reason two: what if all the students in the university decided to put their names on the article? We would have some 26,000. unsigned, undated
There are a number of red names, i.e. people without wikipedia entries. As such the alumnus claim is unsubstantiated, as is notability. Should these not be removed? They can be restored when someone writes a piece on them? There are enough without them.Chemical Engineer (talk) 10:11, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Merge of English Language Teaching Centre
Very rarely, in my experience, are University departments notable outside their parent University; in particular, this article does not contain any assertion of notability per se. Accordingly, I think it should be merged into its parent article. Rodhullandemu 23:39, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Research areas - proposed deletion
This section seems an arbitrary selection of a few research groups, purely referenced to their web pages. As such it gives a misleading picture of the research actually carried out by a large university. I propose its deletion. Chemical Engineer (talk) 19:06, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- I have replaced it with a short reference to the research institutes web page.Chemical Engineer (talk) 15:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Logo or coat of arms?
The Infobox Image currently displays the University's coat of arms, not its current logo. Is this correct procedure for University wiki pages? SheffGruff 21:06, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- There are guidelines for using the University logo - see http://www.shef.ac.uk/marcoms/visualid. I don't believe the Coat of Arms is covered by such guidelines. That is probably the reason for using the Coat of Arms in favour of the University logo. ~~ [Jam][talk] 22:02, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Reproduction of the University's Coat of Arms is restricted by copyright to formal University of Sheffield documents. It may not be used by external organisations in their marketing activities, whether in hard copy or on the web. (See: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/about/arms.html) (86.156.99.91 (talk) 20:12, 30 August 2010 (UTC))
- But Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, not a marketing activity.Chemical Engineer (talk) 20:20, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
- I have therefore reverted this edit. If the Marketing Dept of the University requests, these visual identities will of course be removed.Chemical Engineer (talk) 20:30, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Lead Paragraph
I would suggest that rankings are currently given undue weight in the lead paragraph and should be removed (in accordance with WP:BOOSTER "the lead is not a section to astonish readers by establishing the quality of the college or university, only to serve as a summary of the rest of the article. Nor does the lead of the article have to include a preponderance of rankings and superlatives to establish the notability of a college or university since all accredited colleges and universities are inherently notable." If there is no consensus against, I'll remove the rankings from the lead paragraph. This would leave very little left in the lead paragraph, however, and it could be expanded to better summarise the article. Reg porter (talk) 17:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- Better to leave the rankings in than leave the lead too short. It would be ok to rewrite it but not to fillet it and leave it like that. Alistair Stevenson (talk) 00:07, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Varsity sports
Should have tenpin bowling, equestrian, ultimate frisbee and possibly a couple of others. Also maybe some background information from the website.
Judo also started this year (2011). I added it and someone removed it. I'm going to re-add it and hope it stays. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DigitalViolence (talk • contribs) 12:56, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned references in University of Sheffield
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of University of Sheffield's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
