[edit]I think that "30 minutes from Kandy" gives a wrong impression of the distance. It should be "30 minutes by foot" or better "ten minutes by car".Krankman 20:41, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Oldest and Largest
[edit]University of Peradeniya is entitled to be called the oldest and largest university in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1942, and prior to that, there did not exist an university in Sri Lanka, in the modern sense. The first step in tertiary education was taken with the establishment of the Ceylon Medical College in 1870 by the British rulers. But the sole purpose of the Ceylon Medical College to nurture medical assistants. Then in 1874, a Council of Legal Education (later Law College) was formed to produce lawyers. After that, the Ceylon University College was established on 1st January 1921 as a government institution at "Regina Walawwa", Colombo. The Ceylon University College was granted recognition by the University of London to prepare students for Arts and Science external degrees. But neither of these were recognized as Universities in the modern sense. The establishment of the University College was considered as only a preliminary step in the ultimate creation of a fully-fledged university. The University of Ceylon was established on 1 July 1942 by the Ceylon University Ordinance No.20 of 1942. The University was to be located in Peradeniya and was to be unitary, residential and autonomous. With the establishment of the University, the two Colleges, the Ceylon Medical College and the Ceylon University College, lost their separate identities and were absorbed into the new institution. This is the brief history of the university education in Sri Lanka. Therefore the 1st proper european style university of the country was the University of Ceylon which was later renamed as University of Peradeniya. You can use this source to get a brief idea about the university history of Sri Lanka University of Peradeniya history Astronomyinertia (talk) 17:49, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- Then about the largest issue. UoP has 8 faculties (including the latest Allied Health Science faculty), 2 Postgraduate Institutes, 10 Centres, 71 departments (Agriculture 8, Arts 16, Dental Sciences 7, Engineering 8, Medicine 16, Science 8, Vet. Medicine and Animal Science 4, Allied Health Science 4) Faculties, Postgraduate Institutes and Centres of the University of Peradeniya in the year 2002 and 12000+ internal students as of 2010. The 10 389 figure of students is by 2002, and the university has expanded largely since then. In comaprison, the nearest contestant to the UoP, University of Colombo consists of seven faculties with 41 academic departments and eight other institutions + over 11 000 students. So it can be easily understood that University of Peradeniya is the largest university in Sri Lanka up to date.Astronomyinertia (talk) 18:07, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
All of what you said above is from the University of Peradeniya web site, which is not a reliable source due to the fact it claims it self to be the largest and oldest. University of Ceylon, established at in 1942 is the oldest however it was disbanded in 1979 to from the separate universities. The Peradeniya campus was established in 1950's after the University of Ceylon, established in 1942 at the Colombo Campus. Therefore the University of Colombo has a longer history than Peradeniya. Since you removed the citation requests without adding proper refs I will be removing the statements. Cossde (talk) 16:08, 11 May 2010 (UTC) Since
- Okay. There appears to be no reliable, secondary source to support the claims of oldest and largest university in Sri Lanka. Intersting thing is, University of Colombo claims the same without providing any such sources. It might be true that it has the oldest buildings, since University of Ceylon used the same buildings of Ceylon Medical College and Ceylon University College when it functioned from 1942 to early 1950s before the major portion is being moved to Peradeniya. But that isn't enough to claim the oldest university title isn't it? What I see is no university, currently functioned in Sri Lanka can claim it to be the sole successor of University of Ceylon, which was the first and the only university in Sri Lanka from 1942 to 1978. Therefore, no one can say it is the oldest university in SL, right? But what about the largest issue? University of Peradeniya is the largest university by area (700 hectares), number of faculties (8 compared to UoC's 7), number of departments (71 compared to UoC's 41). Number of students, we don't know exactly. If no relaible secondary sources to be found, oldest and largest claims should be removed from the University of Colombo article also. Astronomyinertia (talk) 13:57, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- How do you measure a university as the largest? normally it is not the landmass or the number of departments, its the student population. Furthermore its not by the university buildings or day it gained the title "university" the age is measured, but the date the institution can trace as its foundation or origin. For example University of Cambridge climes it date of establishment as 1209 AD, the year scholars fled from Oxford after a dispute with townsfolk and formed an association of scholars. Hence it is fair to assume date of establishment as the general year academic work started in the particular location that lead to the eventual formation of the current organization. Cossde (talk) 15:33, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link. It helps to gather a lot of information. But it also shows that even in terms of student population, University of Colombo is not the largest! Open University has 26,000+ students. You can't ignore it because it too is a national university in Sri Lanka. So let OU be the largest university in terms of student population, UoC be the second largest university in terms of student population and UoP be the largest university in terms of staff, area and number of faculties right? As I've seen elsewhere also, largest universities are defined with an "in terms of" part. Otherwise it appears to be meaningless, given the amount of parameters we can take. I agree with your definition for the age. It would be right to consider the date that the institution can trace its origin as the established date. No problem regarding that:-) Astronomyinertia (talk) 20:15, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- OUSL accounts most of its students as external students as most of its courses are distance learning. Therefore we cant call it the largest uni based on student population. As its common knowledge that the internal student population is the basis for the size of the university. Departments and faculties are not a measuring factor as there is no uniform structure on this system. However I do agree that Pera can claim to have the largest land area. However stating " It is the largest university in Sri Lanka in terms of area, academic staff, number of faculties/departments and endowment." Is meaningless as there are other universities that may claim "largest university", therefor I will reword this. Cossde (talk) 14:19, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Furthermore new addition of history should be rewrote as much is direct copy of the history given in the official web site. This was previously removed for copyright violations and as such would be done so too again. Its best it should have inline citations for critical points. Cossde (talk) 14:25, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- The new addition to history is not a verbatim copy of history given in the official web site. However I'll work to make necessary changes in the structure of the present "History" section. Btw what is wrong with "It is the largest university in Sri Lanka in terms of area, academic staff, number of faculties/departments and endowment"'? Those are facts right? And can be considered as trivia. Astronomyinertia (talk) 15:04, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- You are mealy justify your opinion that this is the largest uni based on the said items. Is that encyclopedicCossde (talk) 15:35, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- I don't say UoP IS THE LARGEST uni. I just say UoP is the largest uni, in terms of (concerning/regarding) the area, staff etc. Btw why did you make a sub section called "Ragging", under "Criticism"? If there aren't multiple criticisms, a sub section is not necessary. Astronomyinertia (talk) 16:32, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- First you are interpreting facts to suite your conclusions. Second, the whole criticism is based on raging hence requires a sub of its own. Cossde (talk) 16:36, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Can I ask, is it not necessary to mention UoP is the Sri Lankan uni, which posseses the largest land area, staff and the highest number of faculties? Isn't it encyclopedic? Astronomyinertia (talk) 16:47, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Stating that UoP posseses the largest land area, staff and the highest number of faculties is ok if given with proper supporting refs. Cossde (talk) 18:14, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I think the comparison can be made by the UGC statistics page for the staff numbers. Other facts, we'll have to see.. Astronomyinertia (talk) 18:31, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
