Lede

[edit]

I can't tell what the organization actually does based on the information in the lede. Whom does it serve? How does it serve those people?72.68.108.107 (talk) 17:57, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I felt the same way. I updated the lede and I added some details under the "Structure and relationship to local United Way affiliates" to better address the role of UWW and its affiliates. Unfortunately, its hard to detail UWW without also descripting the role of the local affiliates, which might make the lede bloated. Ew3234 (talk) 22:30, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Santa Barbara

[edit]

I wanted to add a Santa Barbara portion for the United Way Worldwide page because I feel they are an important partner to the organization. I believe that their program, Fun in the Sun is a huge success and truly benefits our entire community. There are so many volunteers and so much effort that is put in every summer to make sure each child and their families are cared for. In addition, the effort continues all throughout the year with planning for the next summer, accommodating new campers, and raising money to continue this wonderful program.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Bubbletoes3 (talkcontribs)

I have no doubt that United Way Santa Barbara is a wonderful organization. However, this is an article on an umbrella worldwide organization, with thousands of member organizations, all of which hold very worthwhile events. It is beyond the scope of this article to go into specific detail about one event at one local United Way. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:53, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with United Way of America

[edit]

According to the organization's website, United Way of America is now part of United Way Worldwide. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 06:36, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Opposed - According to the link you provided, United Way of America helped found United Way Worldwide, an organization that also includes numerous other United Ways from other countried. It may be a founding member, but as best as I can tell from what you have provided, United Way of America ≠ United Way Worldwide. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:29, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - If you check Guidestar.org or the IRS database, you'll find that United Way of America no longer exists. I worked for the United Way of America and my paycheck now says United Way Worldwide. But obviously don't trust me. Trust guidestar.org. 98.218.255.29 (talk) 02:30, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm closing the discussion and removing the tag. --evrik (talk) 14:31, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

obvious astroturfing

[edit]

can somebody please reword this article, particularly the introduction, to be npov? it was almost definitely written by a PR department. Crumblord (talk) 22:08, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Poor article!

[edit]

I mean, WTF is "United Way"? There is no way this article tells you. Is it religious? Is it a society of [otherwise] cranks? Is it a charity? What is its aims? How does one belong / join? Why are is United Way responsible for all the evil of the world? And how come United Way Grand Visor Bill Gates gives it $1billion every year? Why was Pope Francis expelled from United Way, and why? Why does United Way endorse Marxism, meditation and candy floss so comprehensively? :-) Paul Beardsell (talk) 05:38, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, none of that is true, AFAIK, but there are no independent verifiable citations - the only refs are internal to the organisation which I think is a spoof at worst and self-agrandising at best. Really! How come I, a voracious reader well aware of many organisations such as Rotary and Gnomes of Zurich :-) have never heard of these guys? Better refs reqd Paul Beardsell (talk) 05:45, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Listen, United Way's are local organizations, 98% of the news and articles that you can find in google news or wherever else relate to what they do in their communities. UW Worldwide is only the leadership organization for all those locals. So if references are sparse it probably because there's simply not much to say unless it relates to how that networks governs itself. If you want to know who they are and what they do read their guidestar profile (https://www.guidestar.org/profile/13-1635294) like you would any other NGO. Not every NGO choses to spend millions of dollars on ads. And to the guy talking insane stuff about the Pope and Bill Gates, give it a rest. Every public charity's 990's are publically available. Anyone with eyes can see there's never been anyone giving them a billion dollars a year, any NGO receiving that kind of money would have been HUGE unprecedented news in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and no such news exists, and what would it even mean for a Pope to be expelled? Expelled from what? (69.143.196.13 (talk) 12:25, 27 May 2018 (UTC))[reply]

I think you misunderstand entirely: The information to which you allude needs to be *in* the article. This isn't the place to tell *me* about this Falun Gong offshoot, but rather the article. The article is not sufficiently referenced using third party verifiable sources. Paul Beardsell (talk) 08:50, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Psb777: Ahahaha, I came across the same exact problem. All these United Way articles are really confusing me. "...is the overarching organizational structure in charge of approximately 1,800 community-based United Ways in 45 countries and territories." is a really bad leading sentence. It doesn't describe what it is in the most basic sense; instead, it describes how it relates to itself, which is really weirdly redundant. This sentence would be fine for a second sentence in the lede, but I want to know what United Way even is!!! After some brief Google research, what I'm gathering is that United Way...is an organization that hosts several non-profits? It doesn't help if Google isn't even giving me a basic definition, and even United Way's own website isn't giving me a basic definition. All I want to know is what this is. That's all. Someone please give a basic, sensible, non-redundant definition for the lede sentence so that my curiosity can discontinue. Being left with question marks is REALLY BAD nowadays, because this is the era of free, quick, and easily accessible knowledge, so when I find something like this that I can't quickly figure out, I get very frustrated; I hope you can understand that frustration. PseudoSkull (talk) 09:09, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify further, I would improve the lede myself...but the first step is knowing how the heck I would do that... PseudoSkull (talk) 09:13, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I made a new first sentence. This is such a huge cleanup project. I am going to volunteer all the time it takes out to improve this article and other United Way articles since it is in such desperate need for it. PseudoSkull (talk) 09:23, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite

[edit]

I will (most likely) be providing the rewrite for the United Way articles. They are in major need of improvement and, because I'm interested for some unknown reason, I'm going to take it upon myself to finally do it. Things I will be doing: removing unsourced/non-factual information (i.e. those sentences suggesting that United Way of America still exists), adding new relevant information as seen fit, using better sources and formatting sources better, making better ledes so as to better describe the content so people can understand the topics in the general sense, updating the articles, and making a navigation template for United Way-related articles. Note that it may be necessary to merge some articles. I will let the community know when I believe this is a necessity based on how these rewrites go. This will take me a long time to complete, so please be patient. Any help is appreciated, but please, please be nice when doing so. Thanks! PseudoSkull (talk) 16:56, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
