Union Station Merge
[edit]All of the entries in Union station#Union Stations in North America are duplicated here on the dab page and it is pointless to list them twice. Should there be no objections I will merge the entries in the aforementioned article section into the dab page and remove the article section entirely. <<< SOME GADGET GEEK >>> (talk) 18:44, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
New York City's Penn Station
[edit]Isn't NYC Penn Station really a "Union Station"? After all, it serves trains from Amtrak, LIRR and NJT.
user:mnw2000 06:47, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- Maybe. 'Union station' means serving multiple tenant railroads. This station only served multiple railroads during World War I. From the 1920s to the opening of the 1960s, the first incarnation of the station served the Pennsylvania Railroad, plus it served the trains of a guest railroad, the Lehigh Valley Railroad.Dogru144 (talk) 01:38, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Union Station → Union Station (disambiguation) – Per WP:DABNAME, this page should have the "(disambiguation)" tag. Eventhorizon51 (talk) 04:45, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. This might be a misreading of WP:DABNAME. It says: "The title of a disambiguation page is the ambiguous term itself, provided there is no primary topic for that term. If there is a primary topic, then the tag "(disambiguation)" is added to the name of the disambiguation page, as in Jupiter (disambiguation)." In this case there is no primary topic, and none is proposed, so we use the ambiguous term itself, "Union Station", as the page's title. Station1 (talk) 07:04, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose the OP's proposal as currently written. As stated, this is a misinterpretation of the first paragraph of WP:DABNAME. There currently is no primary topic for "Union Station", so the "(disambiguation)" tag is not at all required. An actually page move however would be warranted if there is consensus to instead convert this page to a primary redirect to Union station with the lowercase "s" in "station" (an issue I would be neutral on). - Oppose novice readers need an explanation to this essential term in understanding why this type of name is used. At present the present article suffices. Perhaps it would be helpful to contrast cities with union stations with those that did not have one (in the latter case, New York City; Buffalo; Detroit).Dogru144 (talk) 07:32, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. Yes, this is a misreading. Dabpages do not need a disambiguator themselves unless they are not the primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:19, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- I really don't understand where the "no primary topic" argument is coming from. If there really is no primary topic then what's up with the page at Union station? It would seem silly for readers to land on this page when they're looking for that one. Also, the Union station page has always been listed first and separately on this page, as you would expect with a primary topic. Currently the only difference between this page and that one is the capitalization of the word "Station". I don't know about everyone else but in my view, the titles are just too close to not be confusing. Eventhorizon51 (talk) 16:13, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Now I understand the motivation behind the move proposal. Union Station (proper name) and a union station (generic concept) are two different topics that do not require further disambiguation of their non-identical titles, per WP:DIFFCAPS. If they are potentially confusing, that is handled by the hatnote at union station and the listing of union station on the dab page (not as a primary topic, just as a possible search topic). Station1 (talk) 20:12, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Union station" is an article on the generic term. I'd expect someone searching "Union Station" would be more interested in a place actually called "Union Station". Nohomersryan (talk) 16:33, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- By your logic, should the Friendly Fire (disambiguation) page be moved to simply Friendly Fire? Eventhorizon51 (talk) 16:55, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- I think it should. That's where it was for most of its life until a misguided move a few years ago. Station1 (talk) 20:12, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- By your logic, should the Friendly Fire (disambiguation) page be moved to simply Friendly Fire? Eventhorizon51 (talk) 16:55, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:DABNAME and WP:MALPLACED (for the proposal to keep the redirect to the DAB) and WP:DIFFCAPS (for the argument to redirect to Union station) for the same reason as Red Meat and Bird Box people typing an upper case "S" are more likely to be looking for a specific one so WP:DABCONCEPT doesn't seem sensible for the upper case. Application of WP:DIFFCAPS to disambiguation pages
[edit]The wording of the section at WP:DIFFCAPS suggests that the policy applies "When a spelling variant indicates a distinct topic". It says nothing about whether capitalization can be the sole distinguishing factor between a particular topic and a disambiguation page with a nearly identical expression. So,... it's a little up in the air and, after having looked into it a bit more, I've found that at best, Wikipedia tends to lean towards having the "(disambiguation)" tag even when distinguishing between generic concepts and proper names. There seem to be some disambiguation pages distinguished by only a capital letter (ex. Freezer Burn), but if we really were to follow the rule that user Station1 (and the rest of the discussion here so far) are suggesting, here are just a handful of all the pages that would have to be renamed:
- Absolute Zero (disambiguation) → Absolute Zero
- Sea Urchin (disambiguation) → Sea Urchin
- Dry Cleaning (film) → Dry Cleaning
- Capital punishment (disambiguation) → Capital Punishment
- Death sentence (disambiguation) → Death Sentence
- Dark Matter (disambiguation) → Dark Matter
- Jury Nullification (book) → Jury Nullification
- Mob Mentality (album) → Mob Mentality
I personally disagree with all of these, and I don't think WP:DIFFCAPS should apply to disambiguation pages the same way it applies to content pages. However, I am very curious to see what the community thinks. Perhaps there is a discussion to be had about naming policies here. Eventhorizon51 (talk) 21:59, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Union station in NJ town is completely irrelevant
[edit]The definition of union station is to a train station used by more than one railroad company, line, or service provider. Unfortunately, an editor is posting a station at a town named "Union" as sufficient for including that station on this list.Dogru144 (talk) 04:28, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- This page is not only a list of Union stations – it is disambiguation page for things known as "union station". The station in Union, New Jersey, is known as "Union station" and should be included here. older ≠ wiser 05:19, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
- The above is at variance with the following: "Union station, a train station used by more than one railroad company, line, or service provider"Dogru144 (talk) 04:23, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- That definition is applicable to that type of rail stations described at the article union station, but this is a disambiguation page of things known as " union station", not a list of rail stations of a particular type. older ≠ wiser 10:08, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
