Re: Merge proposal

[edit]

Instead of merging into Spiral galaxy as the merge tag proposed, I thought Barred spiral galaxy was a closer fit to merge this 2 line stub into. However, maybe a better alternative would be to create a new "List of galaxy types" and include this and other orphaned stubs from Category:Galaxy morphological types in it. (ex. Unbarred lenticular galaxy) -- œ 09:52, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have unmerged it, because it is highly inappropriate. SA galaxies are one of the basic type of galaxies used in galaxy classification. It might just need renaming to SA galaxy/SA-galaxy instead... but "unbarred spiral galaxy" is the layman's term for it. [1] ... SA-type galaxy or Type-SA galaxy perhaps.
A list of galaxy types is a good idea, but merging into it would not be good. This article needs expansion, and material in spiral galaxy needs to be split off onto this article and onto intermediate spiral galaxy.
All of the major morphological types are highly notable even if they are stubs.
Major types include: S (Hubble), SA (de Vaucouleurs), SAB (de Vaucouleurs), SB (Hubble), SB (de Vaucouleurs), E (Hubble), E (de Vaucouleurs), Irr (Hubble), Im (de Vaucouleurs), Sm (de Vaucouleurs), D (Yerkes), cD (Yerkes), S0 (Hubble), SA0 (de Vaucouleurs), SAB0 (de Vaucouleurs), SB0 (de Vaucouleurs), dSph, dE, dI
Spiral, Unbarred spiral, Intermediate spiral, Barred spiral, Elliptical, Irregular, Irregular with no structure (previously called Irr-2 under Hubble), Magellanic spiral (irregular with spiral structure under Hubble typing, also called Irr-1; further typed as SAm, SBm, SABm, as galaxies with one arm and with or without bars), Diffuse, Supergiant Diffuse, Lenticular, Unbarred lenticular, Intermediate lenticular, Barred lenticular, dwarf spheroidal, dwarf elliptical, dwarf irregular
Major subtypes include: pec (peculiar galaxy), r (ringed galaxy (not to be confused with ring galaxy)), s
Other types that have high notability include: Hoag-type galaxy, Ring galaxy
At the very least all these should have articles. (They still don't)

Ok well I'll defer to your expertise. If you feel like you can expand this and the other galaxy type articles please do! -- œ 11:28, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
