Sourced material
[edit]Let's not remove the only sourced assertion in the whole article. If there is a source disputing the assertion then let's include that too. -Will Beback 02:03, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Not necesserily a valid idea. The problem with Saba (although he is the most important Italian poet of the last century, superior to both Montale and Quasimodo) is that he is largely untranslatable into English, and thus gets no attention in anglophone lit. crit. The source sited has no legitimacy whatsoever. Wood is an unknown entity, with a political motive, see his own blurb. Joseph Brodsky, who studied Saba in depht, never mentioned anything of the sort. - You wrote in your edit summary:
- removed the partisan opinion on saba's alleged homosexuality by a marginal scolar disputed by everyone else in the field
- Do you have any source for this dispute? -Will Beback 03:34, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, this was poorly phrased. There is no dispute at all. Just the Wood allegation, unsupported.Galassi 03:42, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Also, the allegations are based on the novella "Ernesto". By comparison Robert Musil covered similar themes, but suffered no such allegations.Galassi 03:56, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
But Musil published his novel. It isn't the case of Saba's Ernesto.
Added biographical content
[edit]I have recently added and corrected some biographical content.[1] The prose needs improving. It's basically just "he did this, then he did that." Six of the 8 paragraphs begin with "In (date) ..." What's really needed, though, is about the same amount of text on the man's literary influences and impact - that's way out of my league. I used Moleta (2004), which was praised by John Taylor in the TLS on 3 Feb 2006., and cited extensively by Taylor in 2008 --Anthonyhcole (talk) 13:01, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
Reviews
[edit]Reviews of different translations of Saba. They're well-written, concise summaries of the man's life and work and may inspire you to approach their clarity and readability on the article page.

- Umberto Saba's self-inventions, TLS review of Hochfield and Nathan (2009).

Inclusion into Category:LGBT Jews
[edit]My addition of Umberto Saba into Category:LGBT Jews has been reverted. This categorisation is supported by this source (by glbtq.com, a reliable source), which was cited on the List of LGBT Jews article, which I mentioned. I would be very grateful if any editors would add the category, with information from the source to back this up. Thank you in advance. Zumoarirodoka (talk) 01:38, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- And if there is dispute over the content and/or reliability of the source, then that reference and Saba's inclusion on the Wikipedia list article should be removed. Zumoarirodoka (talk) 01:55, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- The source given doesn't meet RS standards. The list of LGBT Jews has some OR and unreliable sources. Anne Frank is one example that needs purging.--Galassi (talk) 01:59, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- I've removed Saba from that list; I was considering removing Anne Frank, but that's caused controversy in the past, so I'll leave that up to the talk pages to decide. Thanks for your input. Zumoarirodoka (talk) 11:55, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
