Loss of DCH 1 (IX-44), former USS Walker(DD-)

[edit]

Neches was returning to Pearl Harbor with the damage control hulk DCH 1 (IX-44), formerly the destroyer USS Walker, in tow. On 28 December 1941, DCH 1 was cast adrift and scuttled by gunfire from Neches at 26°35′N 143°49′W. - no reference - any idea why? Preplanned? Wfoj3 (talk) 23:21, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I do not have the exact reference on hand to cite it unfortunately, but in the interview with my great-grandfather, Robert White that I added to the bottom of the page, my great uncle asked him about the USS Neches and he did say that when they left Pearl harbor at about 5pm, (not sure what date) they were on their way to meet a destroyer in the general direction of wake island to refule task force number 14.
He said that they were supposed to meet USS Jarvis 393 the morning of the attack but the torpedoes sunk the ship before that happened.
Despite the fact that I cannot cite the interview because it was done in my great-grandparents' house and is only on VHS which I recently discovered, I know that it is a necessary addition to the page as an add on article at the bottom. If anyone wants me to email them a 5-hour voice recording of the VHS in grainy quality, talk to me and I will do just that because the interview is really cool and of much historical significance because of the ships he was on. 30yennb14 (talk) 17:53, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry, I forgot to press the reply button when I put that. Not sure what good it will do seeing as you asked the question 4.5 years ago. 30yennb14 (talk) 22:42, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
