[edit]The USS Fechteler was sunk in the Mediterranean not in the Atlantic. My dad was in the forward fire room when the torpedo hit. The hatch was jammed from the concussion and he and the other guys in the fire room couldn’t get it open. Fortunately, an officer opened the hatch from the outside and let them out. Before the officer went to see if he could help any other sailors he said to my dad, “Quack, ( Bill Quackenbush) there is nothing more you can do. You had better get over the side.” The officer went down with the ship. Gary Quackenbush (talk) 23:53, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
