She?

Is there really a need to refer to the non-living aircraft carrier as "she"? Alphalife 04:28, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

All ships are referred to as "she". Mjroots (talk) 21:27, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

References?

The entire article on the Vinson is unreferenced. Why pick on certain posts, and not others, as to material to delete. I rather liked the "nicknames" section, and I believe those are many of the nicknames used, even though I did not post that material.

Likewise, I was present when acting-captain Francisco "Frank" Anchando played a chess match with Walter Wagner one flight below the captain's bridge, in Frank's quarters. The captain, who bunked 'behind' the bridge on the same deck, held Frank in such great esteem that Frank bunked only one deck directly below the captain, and not with the other enlisted men or officers below the flight deck. Frank was his immediate communications officer when the captain was present, and acting captain whenever the captain was ashore. Frank was the undisputed US Military chess champion. He played in chess tournaments around the globe, and routinely took first place. Frank served honorably for many years, though not always with the Vinson. He also served during the Gulf War in that campaign.

When Frank was assigned to the Vinson, shortly after it was homeported in Alameda, he issued a challenge to the local folk of that area to engage in a chess match. They played "speed chess", i.e. quick ten-minute games. Wagner took him up on his challenge, and won a few games, including the two most important ones - the first one and the last one. It was being joked about that Wagner would not be allowed to leave the ship if he did not win again. To Frank's surprise, Wagner pulled a win out of the bag, then returned control of the ship back to Frank, and took his leave of the ship.

Chess is the ultimate war-game, and it is highly unusual to turn the prize of command-of-the-ship to the winner of such a battle, but that was what occurred; at least while Frank served as interim captain. I believe this true story deserves to be included in the illustrious history of the ship.

I'd like you to consider this before you delete again. If you can show me that you had the authority of a captain of the ship, I will respect your action.

Actually, I only have to show you WP:ATTR to remove your psot. I really don't see how any of it is relevant. You are correct in that the entire article is unsourced, but thst is no excuse to add further unsourced information. Wikipedia does not use personal information from eyewitnesses, but rather verifiable material from reliable published sources. THis is not optional. Whetehr I was ever the ccaptain of anything is irrelevant, as it is up to you as the contributor of this info to provide reliable sources when requested. As you have not done so, the information has been removed abaing. Remember, anyone can claim to be or know anything on Wikipedia - I can claim I was there, that I was the captain, and that we were playing stip poker - that's just as provable as anything you claim. If the story is notable enough to have been recorded in a published source, then you are on your way to having it included. If not, sorry. - BillCJ (talk) 23:54, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. If you can cite reliable, third party, published sources then we can include the information. Wikipedia is about verifiablility, content that could be contested in good-faith needs to be referenced. You have not provided any sources other than your own original research, which Wikipedia cannot accept. Woody (talk) 00:08, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Took all of 30 seconds to turn up the DANFS online entry that is the source of our material, far less time than it took to type in all the back-and-forth here... Stan (talk) 22:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for finding the DANFS page. However, it does not mention the story in questions, so sources are still needed for that. - BillCJ (talk) 02:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Indeed, the reference just sets the baseline for evaluating future proposed additions. This article is so old it goes back to the days before it was usual to have references. Stan (talk) 21:49, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

The Nickname

Why is the Carl Vinson nicknamed "The Gold Eagle?" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.247.245.130 (talk) 06:04, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

The Carl Vinson was nicknamed "The Golden Eagle" because she was stationed in Alameda, California and the State's bird is the Golden Eagle. The Carl Vinson also had several other nicknames; "Chuckie V," "Gold Eagle," "San Francisco's Own," "Carl Prison," "Chuck Wagon," "Starship Vinson," "America's Favorite Carrier," "The CArl Prison," and "Cell Block 70."--Terry Chapman (talk) 00:51, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I have a creditable source for the nicknames of this carrier, I feel that it would be important to put the nicknames back in the article...here is the source: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AIRCRAFT_CARRIERS_WORLDWIDE/database?method=reportRows&tbl=3. --Terry Chapman (talk) 02:49, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry Terry, but online forums do not meet Wikipedia's verifiability and reliable source requirements. - Nick Thorne talk 13:12, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Since it's been about 9 months and no source has been found, isn't it about time to remove them from the article? ChadH (talk) 19:44, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

First Aircraft Carrier in the Bering Sea

The Carl Vinson(CVN-70) was not the first US Aircraft Carrier to operate in the Bering Sea. That honor belongs to the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43), the "Tireless Warrior" was indeed "Older and Bolder". During the Cold War the ship carried on air operations in the Bering Sea , the date was July 11th 1962. The mission was to launch two VAH-2(Heavy-2's)and they were to penetrate Russian Air Space, then return to the ship. The total flight time was near 5 hours and the mission was successful. 68.230.223.100 (talk) 01:30, 23 October 2009 (UTC)== USS Carl Vinson on 5 day rest and recreation visit in Fremantle, Western Australia ==

Just saw her on berth yesterday and checked the Fremantle port news: http://www.fremantleports.com.au/mediapublications/news/1288.asp, I suppose this fact contradicts a report of her returning to Norfolk on July 1 2009? Didn't want to edit the entry in the article unless someone else could perhaps confirm her presence in WA. I'm going down to the harbor later today with my binoculars and camera... Westworldviewer (talk) 03:01, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey sorry, I've never used the wikipedia discussion pages before, so sorry if I'm doing this wrong, but I can confirm this boat is at Naval Station Norfolk at the moment. 70.161.159.41 (talk) 15:56, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Not sure what carrier was there, but Vinson was at Naval Station Norfolk on 5 July 09 when you posted. And she hasn't been in the pacific in a few years. 68.230.223.100 (talk) 01:30, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea where Vinson was when the report was made, but saying that Fremantle is in the Pacific is like saying that Los Angeles is on the Atlantic. Fremantle is on the Indian Ocean coast of Western Australia, a continent away from the Pacific, and US ships operating in the Gulf often go into Freo for some R&R. - Nick Thorne talk 04:55, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Don't believe he meant to imply Fremantle = Pacific. US Navy Sailors refer to ships as being "Atlantic" or "Pacific" based on their home port being on the east or west coast of the US. The point is that Vinson hasn't operated in the Pacific theater for a while and is therefore pretty unlikely to be east of the Arabian Gulf or west of the Gulf of Mexico.E2a2j (talk) 16:15, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Haiti Deployment

I'm not sure that the deployment of the ship to Haiti for rescue operation should be in the intro, as the ship has been around a significant number of years. Falcon8765 (talk) 21:48, 14 January 2010 (UTC) I am in agreement that current active operations do not need to be in the opening paragraph, except for maybe a passing comment in the last sentence.--Terry Chapman (talk) 02:47, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Osama bin Laden burial

I see the news reports, but when I check location, the USS Carl Vinson has been in port being repaired after the airplane fire at the time of the burial, located nowhere near the Persian Gulf or the North Sea as reported. I suspect news reports mistook the Vinson's battle group for the Vinson itself, as the battle group would indeed have been in the right locations at the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Downix (talkcontribs) 17:35, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure about the whereabouts, but I went ahead and added the OBL(cursed be his name) as part of the category since there is a connection. If it applies to another ship, then please place it there. --Hourick (talk) 20:52, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

NCAA game on aircraft carrier

we might want to watch this eveloping tory for veterans day. USS Carl Vinson may host first NCAA game on aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson "Carrier Classic" NCAA Game Discussions Ongoing there have been talks to host the first NCAA basketball game on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nrpf22pr (talkcontribs) 13:55, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm going to delete the part about Navy playing Air Force on the same day. Although I have seen numerous sources now mentioning the Michigan State / North Carolina game, none mention any other game. — Michael J 20:46, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

A two-star general of the Army becomes a captain of an aircraft carrier. I'm mightily impressed. LOL. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.169.28.48 (talk) 23:05, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
