Austria vs Greece
[edit]Match on November 5th, 1967, was abandoned by Mr. Gere, Referee from Hungary, after excesses, but the UEFA decided result as void. Reasons are not notified (maybe, there was no need for a different decision like 3-0 and 2 points for Greece, because Greece finishing on 2nd place, couldn't draw level with the Soviet Team). But there is another notable story: The 1967 Greek coup d'état prevented the match Greece vs Austria on April 23rd, 1967. Austrian Team was billeted in Athens when the General's coup started. The match was cancelled; it was played on October 4th, 1967. 213.225.14.221 (talk) 17:25, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- It's to add that above mentioned match on October 4th, 1967, was the first match against each other.213.225.14.221 (talk) 19:44, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- We discussed the former match back in 2012, here. While UEFA's website lists the match as a 1–1 draw and gives no indication of anything special with it, we then decided to go along with other sources, particularly RSSSF, which excludes the match from the rankings, reporting that it was abandoned and voided. But now I wonder if the "verifiability, not truth" principle wouldn't demand that we nevertheless include the match in the rankings like UEFA does, UEFA being the organizer of the competition and the governing body of European football. RSSSF's information would still be reported, in a footnote. To draw a parallel, sources disagree on certain goalscorers in the early World Cups, and the Wikipedia articles stick to FIFA's statistics and report the differences in RSSSF's statistics in footnotes. --Theurgist (talk) 18:25, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Let me clarify: I do believe that the match was abandoned and voided, but as long as UEFA (and FIFA) currently treat the match as an ordinary 1–1 draw, I think so should we, per our guidelines. --Theurgist (talk) 21:15, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Should not be changed. RSSSF is reliable, and it's more likely a mistake by UEFA when uploading historical records to their website than them recognising the result as valid. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:30, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Theurgist: To add, a UEFA newsletter from 1967 verifies the result as invalid and does not include the result in the table (screenshot). A note states "Compte n'a pas été tenu du match interrompu Autriche — Grèce du 5 novembre 1967 à Vienne", or "No account was taken of the interrupted match between Austria and Greece on 5 November 1967 in Vienna".
