Bolson Peak?

[edit]

What is the source of the name Bolson Peak? I gather this is being applied to the high point of the Turtle Mountains. But the name does not appear in the U.S. Board on Geographic Names domestic names database. So it is not "official."

The name does appear in the Benchmark California Road & Recreation Atlas. (That's what inspired me to research the name.) I have the 11th edition and it's on page 107, in grid square G-11: "Bolson Peak 4231." But the name doesn't appear in any of the other sources currently listed on this wiki page. That includes the 1985 Parker, AZ 1:100000 map.

I'm also curious where the elevation number (4231) came from.

Currently, the only other online reference to the name is on a travel blog.

Update 1:

The publisher of the Benchmark Road & Recreation atlases provided these coordinates for "Bolson Peak": 34.33208952543778, -114.86067209151206

That maps to a high point approximately 5.3 miles NNW of the accepted Turtle Mountains range high point. (Coordinates for that: 34.261099, -114.827676).

Per the 7.5' quad, the elevation of "Bolson Peak" is 1294 meters (4245.4 feet). So again, I don't know where the 4231 elevation number came from.

The representative who emailed me the coordinates was unable to tell me where the name came from. At any rate, it appears Bolson Peak is not the range high point.
