Updating this page

Hi. My name is Christin Di Scipio and I work at Turo. The current page is outdated. It doesn't include Turo's international expansion, latest funding rounds, etc. Additionally, many of our competitor pages have a section on safety the Turo page appears to be missing. I've put together some proposed changes here with strikeouts and bolding to indicate trims and new content respectively, that I would like to suggest as a way of bringing the page up-to-date. As I have a conflict of interest, I am prodding for feedback on the suggested changes from disinterested editors.

It looks good to me, except don't replace "renter" with "traveler", per WP:EUPHEMISM and Wikipedia:Use plain English, and leave out the "Safety" section. The preceding paragraph mentions $1 million insurance; that's sufficient detail. Mention that Liberty Mutual is an investor in the company, in addition to being the insurance vendor. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 19:09, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

Turo (car rental) → Turo (car sharing) – <Turo is not a car rental company, it is a car sharing company. • Neutral seems pretty uncontroversial. However, I see that Turo's website refers specifically to "car rental."
• Oppose. The evidence just presented by Mathmitch7 is pretty conclusive -- even Turo sees itself as a rental company. NewYorkActuary (talk) 16:09, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

July 2018 cleanup

I edited this article significantly. It needed a cleanup. It read like a corporate brochure touting the company, as indeed it had to because much of it was written by Christin at Turo, who works for Turo. This is an encyclopedia, not an advertising venue. Chisme (talk) 17:30, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Explanation: Most sources say Turo was founded as "RelayRides" in 2009 (when the company was founded) [6][7][8][9]. However, some good sources say it was founded in 2010 (when the service was launched)[10][11]. Since this is a company infobox/page, I think 2009 (when the company was founded) is the right year. Unfortunately, the sources are not always clear about whether they are specifying the year the company, or the service, was launched, leading to some confusion.

Explanation: This section is based exclusively on primary sources, in violation of WP:PRIMARY and WP:UNDUE. However, I did find a Bloomberg citation that could be used to add it to the History section. This would comply with the guidance at WP:CRITS and avoid undue weight on a local dispute on a page about a global corporation.

 Not done - "dispute with local regulators" is too euphemistic/vague when we have details, including in the Bloomberg cite.

2. Discuss changes to insurance content

Turo does not require renters to have personal coverage if the renter books a trip with a protection plan provided by Turo. Turo provides up to $750,000 in third party liability insurance from Travelers Insurance in the United States, up to $2 million in Canada, and up to £20 million in the UK, with 5 plans varying in vehicle protection.

Explanation: Cited exclusively to primary sources (Turo's own website) and a lot of the information is out-dated or incorrect. Turo has different insurance partners and different insurance products in different countries. Many of those products/partners change frequently. A general statement that Turo offers insurance would be a good replacement, but I am not aware of any good citations for that, other than NerdWallet, which I don't think Wikipedia accepts.

This will have two legal effects: first, the protections afforded to car rental companies will not be extended to Turo, second, services like Uber and Lyft will try to leverage this case so that they are no longer deemed to be a transportation company.

@Rusalkii: Below is a revised request #1 based on your feedback above asking for more details about the "dispute with local regulators". For context, "over a dispute with regulators" is what the cited source says in the preview (I wasn't being euphemistic/vague on purpose), but I was able to get access to the full article, which has more details like you mentioned.

Whether to mention the exclusivity policy

I'm cleaning up this article a bit and removed a section on their exclusivity policy: one source was their Terms of Service directly, and the other a company blog. While I haven't found secondary coverage of the exclusivity policy (i.e., likely not worth a mention here), I did find this May 2022 statement from Competition Bureau Canada. It announces that Turo discontinued their exclusivity policy in Canada following concerns raised by the Bureau. If there is secondary coverage I would support inclusion, though with the currently-available sources (a company blog post and government press release) I don't think it warrants mention.
