further info
[edit]I did receive an response from the Town Historical Planner for the demolition information. The town provided a scan of a photocopy from the Mass Historical Commission to use for illustration. As yet none of these records are available digitally. I will ask the Town Historian to add it to the MethuenHistory.org page so it can be referenced there.
As yet, the information I have received this far on this building is purely anecdotal from the Town Historian. I am still looking for source that can be properly cited.
The last owner thought that the house was a Shaker house moved to Methuen. He gutted the interior and stripped the clapboards, planning to "restore" it to the Shaker style. He was arrested for something or other and abandoned the project. Leaving the house naked to the elements for a few years before it was condemned.
According to the previous Town historian, the house was moved from New Hampshire and when it reached the state line it was moved to the side for a few weeks while the toll charge was negotiated. The toll collectors had never had a house come down the pike before.EraserGirl (talk) 15:29, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
