ЧР IS Russian, it's an abbreviation in Cyrillic. This should be given in Latin characters so people who can't read Cyrillic can read it, and then the original "ЧР, or чрезвычайный режим" included for completeness. It ought to read "ChR (črezvyčajnyj režim), or Emergency Mode (Rus. ЧР, or чрезвычайный режим) or if you must use the Cyrillic as primary, then say "ЧР, or ChR (чрезвычайный режим, or črezvyčajnyj režim)". That's the best I can come up with using online translators, but I shouldn't need to use 3rd party translators just to read an English Wiki page.
Suppose I'm reading this out loud to someone, and I come to a line reading "Activating the ЧР mode"? I can't read that, I can't pronounce it, I have no idea what it means. It's one thing using the original German word for something, for example, because people can at least read that (usually). Reading Cyrillic requires an understanding of an entirely new alphabet. So I know now what the funny symbol on the throttle of a MiG-21bis probably looks like, but thats about it. You might as well be talking about a Chinese fighter and say to do this "you active the 会意字 and then engage": the only thing to do with it is skip over it, because it's just gibberish if you don't understand the characters. Not understanding the language is one thing, not even being able to read the word is another.
