I am the original creator of the Trunkmonkey concept
I won't be editing this page for obvious reasons, but I am the original creator of the Trunkmonkey concept which started as a joke within the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club. It quickly expanded to be the mascot of our race team, Trunkmonkey Racing, and we started receiving hundreds of photos from the Subaru community to support the idea as an official mascot for Subaru drivers worldwide. R/West, the marketing group that created the ads, claims they came up with the idea on their own even though the trunkmonkey.com domain was active, indexed, and quite popular for 3 years before they released their first commercials for the Portland, OR market during the 2003 Super Bowl. See http://www.trunkmonkey.com/history/ for a brief overview of events. Sean (talk) 18:35, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Missing ad
There exists another Trunk Monkey ad, as you can see on youtube.com. It's about a pregnant woman giving birth in a car, and guess who the helping doctor is :). Someone better in writing than me should add it. 86.103.198.117 20:15, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Purpose of ads
What's the purpose of this series of ads? I'm from Germany and stumbled over them by chance (we don't have these ads here), but I don't quite understand them. Is there a real concept called trunk monkey or something like it, which helps the driver one way or another, and they simply made it literal and over the top for the ad? Or is it suppossed to be totally nonsense just to make the car group more popular? This should be explained as well maybe. 86.103.198.117 20:15, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- It is solely to be over the top. There is a service by General Motors called [OnStar] that is a cellular telephone based help and information service that this could be loosely based on. You push the "OnStar" button, and you can talk to an operator over a speakerphone in the car to get help or information, and the OnStar system calls an operator automatically in case of an accident. 24.22.40.177 23:04, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- The only times I have seen these ads on TV, they have been advertising GM vehicles. It appears that dealers can buy the rights to run them, and ad their logos to it for broadcast. Based on the trunkmonkey.com web site, I would say it started as a joke, and has since grown into a marketing machine. I didn't even know before reading this that they were originally made for Subaru - I've always seen them for GM (particularly Chevy) dealers.

New External Link
I added an external link to trunkmonkeyad.com. This is the official source for the original commercials, as it is maintained by the Suburban Auto Group of Oregon, for whom the original commercials were produced.
