Conflict of interest
[edit]I am moving a discussion I was having with Mjolsnes here, as it seems relevant for everyone who has been editing this article recently. Here is the reply to Mjosnes that I made on his talk page:
- Hi there. The guidelines you are talking about are at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Editing articles if you have a conflict of interest is strongly discouraged, and this is true for all kinds of conflicts of interest, not just financial ones. In particular, if Mmillerfsm08 is correct in his accusation that information was added to the Troy Kelley article by a rival political campaign, then that would also be a strong conflict of interest. By the way, you shouldn't speculate on the identity of editors who may wish their identities to remain private, per our policy on outing.
Now, as for the article, my opinion as an uninvolved third party is that some of this information probably belongs in there in some form, but as it was it was basically an attack piece, with all negative information and no positive information. What the article needs now is basic biographical info like date of birth, education details, details of previous political campaigns, etc. Please bear in mind that we are writing a biography, and not an editorial. Once we have this kind of basic info we can think about carefully adding criticisms and controversies.
I recommend that you read the neutral point of view policy, particularly the part on affording each aspect of the subject its due weight, and also the policy on biographies of living people; after this you should start a discussion on the article's talk page to try and get a consensus on what information should be included in the article. If there is a consensus to add anything, you can make a protected edit request and it will be added to the article. Let me know if you have any questions about this. I hope this will provide a useful base for you to start discussion of what should be added to the article. If you aren't sure about anything, just ask me on my talk page and I'll be glad to help. Best regards — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 09:35, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
