Full Metal Jacket?
IMDB does not list Troy as a location for this movie, and I'd be awfully surprised if it was, given Kubrick's normal practice of building all of his sets on sound stages in the UK. Can anybody confirm the addition of that movie in the Culture section as having used Troy as a location?--Gnhn 00:30, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Gnhn is correct in that the majority of the film was shot in the UK. The only scenes not shot in the UK were done on Parris Island, not in Troy. For reference, please see the filming locations for Full Metal Jacket as provided by IMDB.com. Reference to "Full Metal Jacket" and call for cleanup have been removed. --Deputy Marshall 05:48, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
MapInfo is not in Troy
MapInfo only uses a Troy mailing address. I it is located in the RPI tech park, about 5 miles south of Troy. It has been there for over 10 years.
- I'm not so sure. Compare a Google map search for MapInfo near Troy with one for RPI tech park; the first fiew hits for both are all within a few hundred feet of each other, so I'd say both are in Troy – the south end of Troy to be sure, but still in Troy. —BenFrantzDale 02:24, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- The RPI Technology Park is most definitely located within Troy's city limits. I'm also confused as to where "5 miles South of Troy" comes from, since I'm right near the top of Congress, and from here to the Tech Park is less than 4 miles. Deputy Marshall 13:49, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Follow Up - MapInfo outside the City of Troy According to the following offical city map - http://www.troyny.gov/planning_zoning/troyzoningmap.pdf, the RPI Tech Park is south of the city limits of Troy. I would suggest rewording to say something like - MapInfo was founded in Troy, NY and is located in the region.
- Further follow-up:
- It does appear from the map to be South of the city limits. However, every indication from every source is that the Rensselaer Technology Park is located in the city of Troy. Its mailing address is 100 Jordan Road, Troy, NY according to both the Park itself and all information available about the Park. So despite what the map may appear to indicate, it is considered to be within Troy, New York. Additionally, all arguments that "One Global Vw" is simply a mailing address need know that Global View is actually within the Rensselaer Technology Park. Is there any way we could get absolute, concrete clarification? --Deputy Marshall 06:11, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Mapinfo is NOT in the city limits of Troy, NY; neither is the RPI Tech Park in which it sits. The tech park and Mapinfo are in the Town of North Greenbush, a separate political entity south of the city of Troy. Zip code boundaries are made by the USPS and not affiliated with political boundaries whatsoever, a Troy zipcode does not make a business a Troy business.
- I agree with the unsigned comments immediately above. Besselfunctions 21:11, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Troy Trojans
Wasn't there a National League team called the Troy Trojans? Shouldn't we mention that? ςפקιДИτς 23:50, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
You might be thinking of the Troy Haymakers, who I've heard on numerous occassions are considered to be one of (if not THE) earliest professional baseball team in the US. And yes, they should get a mention. Anyone got any information? Deputy Marshall 03:30, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Well, I think that a team from Troy folded, and almost all of the players went to the new New York Giants, but I could be wrong. ςפקιДИτς 21:02, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- Never mind. The players were split between the Giants and the crosstown Metropolitans of the American Association. When the Mets won the 1884 pennant, the best players on the team were moved to the Giants, who had the same ownership as the Mets. ςפקιДИτς 21:10, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
i might be mistaken but i swear i heard several times that troy is still an honorary MLB city because of its extremely early historical association with the sport. if someone could find some proof of this, either from the cooperstown hall of fame or elsewhere, i havent been able to find any.
I have added a paragraph which should meet the needs of the article.159.247.3.210 18:21, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Edits
I was wondering if more of the external links could be moved to that header and if there is duplication of map links? Stepp-Wulf 04:00, 11 October 2005 (UTC).
What external links do you mean? If it's something not directly related to Troy, and just there as a point of reference for something else, then I wouldn't think so. I looked it over and didn't see any duplication of map links, but I could be mistaken. Deputy Marshall 03:36, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Festivals and Other Annual Happenings?
Should there be a seperate section in the main article specifically highlighting festivals and other annual (or otherwise regular) events (The Riverfront Arts Fest, Riverfest, Flag Day Parade, Victorial Stroll, etcetera) in Troy?--Deputy Marshall 06:28, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
trivia
why no mention of the fact that the inventor of the ferris wheel lived in troy and got his inspiration from the burden waterwheel? the burden waterwheel was the largest waterwheel in the world at the time and had the same number of buckets as ferris' first ferris wheel. also troy is the first place in america to use the bessemer process of steel making, and even though many history books place the industrial revolution as beginning in lowell, ma it actually is considered to have started in rensselaer county (due to the forerunners of BASF having the first chemical and dye factory in the usa at rensselaer and the first steel manufacturing in troy) and im sure someone with more time could find lots of citations where people show this to be true.
Link
I thought this site was interesting (and has been removed and re-added a few times), but since we really aren't supposed to link to blogs on Wikipedia, I figured I'd just move it here. It seems non-commercial and informative...

The House of the Good Shepherd
What happened to the House of the Good Shepherd (circa 1954), where was it located and what hospital did the residents use for birthing? TY! Blkmjkwmn 12:13, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Added Education Section
Might add summaries for each school later, but links should suffice for now. Should the 10+ elementary schools in troy be added (2, 12, 14, 16, 18, Carol Hill, Turnpike, the other one in 'burgh, and several catholic ones...)?Jim (talk) 01:12, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
motto translation
I think the translation of the motto, fuit Ilium, Troia est, as "As it was Troy is", may be incorrect. It's been a while but that looks to me more like, "Ilium has been, Troy now is", where Ilium was an older name for Troy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.241.240.30 (talk) 21:28, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Nightlife section removed
I removed the Nightlife section, which you can see here. While I personally agree with most everything written in the section, it is an obvious violation of WP:NOTGUIDE. Should you disagree, please offer a non-biased rewrite below. No specific place of business deserves more than one or two sentences a piece to uphold WP:NPOV and more than three business should be mentioned (i.e. all or none). Consensus should be met before it is added again to the article. ~ Wadester16 (talk) 23:22, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- You were absolutely right to do so. Our city articles have a tendency to draw such sections-- they'd be great if this was a travel magazine, but it's an encyclopedia. "The Ruck carries your typical alcoholic beverages, and has its own signature drink called "The Bundy" which is a mixed drink" (random sample). Encyclopedic it ain't. -- Mwanner | Talk 01:42, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- I completely agree that the particular Nightlife section you removed deserved to be removed and was blatant advertising. I do believe that a nightlife section does merit being there. Perhaps any intentional government intervention to revive downtown through bars and such. What I think is a good nightlife section can be found at the Albany, New York article. No particular bars are mentioned, only neighborhoods (Center Square, Downtown) and streets, the focus of the city gov't to bring people back to the city after 5pm, concerts in the park and at the Plaza. I recognize that this is not a guide, but at the same time most city articles do have a festival section along with info about parks, museums, etc not to be found in most encyclopedia. That's just my five-cents (I charge more for my opinion than the standard two cents, inflation you know).Camelbinky (talk) 23:55, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Geobox
The geobox|settlement should be changed to infobox settlement. I can do the change myself in due time or someone else can. But it should be changed.Camelbinky (talk) 21:19, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- I recind my suggestion, not because I have changed my opinion, but because I personally believe others may challenge it. Since I believe all Capital District municipal articles should be consistent with each other, I'll go and change Albany, New York and the all the others that use infoboxes to this geobox. I personally think infoboxes are superior and will be joining the infobox wikiproject to learn more and I'd even like to get some other Capital District wikiproject members involved with me to create an infobox specifically for Capital District municipalities.Camelbinky (talk) 05:16, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- I converted to the geobox because it is a superior format that allows for more info, presented in a more flexible and readable manner. I try to use them wherever possible. Daniel Case (talk) 15:30, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- To explain one reason why it's superior: the locator technology in the geobox maps does away with having to create a separate pushpin map for every community.
There's no reason to create a separate infobox for CD municipailities, or any municipalities anywhere ... the geobox fields, properly used, are meant to accomodate any information specific to an area. Daniel Case (talk) 15:36, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- To explain one reason why it's superior: the locator technology in the geobox maps does away with having to create a separate pushpin map for every community.
Thank you for giving an example as to why you believe it to be superior. I looked at Template:Infobox Settlement and did not see any differences but I didnt know about the pushpin map problem, thank you for taking the time to teach me something new.Camelbinky (talk) 15:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Citations for geographic trivia
Does anyone know of a citation for Monument Square being listed in the infobox as the "center", seems a little west to be the center of the city, though maybe it is on the center line dividing north-south. Though I've never understood that part of a geobox, what is the point of "center" and by who's definition? Also, does anyone have a reference for Troy's lowest point as being sea-level, I'm not so sure the Hudson is at sealevel north of the Port of Albany, though being a tidal estuary it is possible that makes whereever the Hudson River level is at then technically "sealevel", but when researching the Port of Albany-Rensselaer I thought I read that the port was the northern most sealevel point on the Hudson, but I could be mistaken or the source was wrong (alot of sources online out there are).Camelbinky (talk) 20:26, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Incorporation Date
This city has two different incorporation dates (1796 in top section, 1793 in infobox) as a village, and the Fire Department section suggests yet another date. What is the correct date as a village? NewYorkeruser (talk) 04:31, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
