What an incredible tool! I wonder if google's "find similar pages" facility uses the same principles as those used here? Other similar tools include blinkx but which tends to multimedia instead of text but presents the same type of graphical node like results.

No, Tropes Zoom relies on semantic similarity and ontology to search documents. Google uses links and popularity, computing something that relies on "other sites listed on pages that link to the specified page". See: http://www.googleguide.com/similar_pages.html
