Names, names, names...
[edit]What is the name of this set? Various sources show:
- Trois grandes études
- 3 grandes études
- Grandes études pour les deux mains séparées et réunies
I went with the first, but just because a word looks better than a number and the third is too long. The names of the études themselves are equally ambiguous. They are sometimes known by the hand that they are written for:
- Pour la main gauche seulment
- Pour la main droit seulment
- Pour les deux mains
With "pour la" and "seulment" sometimes omitted. But they also have descriptive names:
- Fantaisie in A-flat major
- Introduction, Variations et Finale
- Mouvement semblable et perpetuel
I've seen them identified with various combinations of these. And to make matters worse, the third has also acquired the name "Rondo Toccata". If anybody out there, maybe with a copy of Ronald Smith's book (Alkan the Man, the Music), can provide a more definitive set of names, that would be great. Jfmantis (talk) 03:58, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
