"American Samoa Track & Field had enterecd Trevor in the Shot Put event but weeks before we were infromed that it was not possible to enter any quota athlete in the Field Events. That this was a new policy and the discretion was left to the IAAF Official in charge of the Chmapionships. After being informed, I was very disappointed and was intstructed not to send my Shot Put athlete but to send an athlete to run the 100 meter event. It was ironic that this same opportunity that had given Trevor's sister the chance to compete in which she astonished the world by winning the Bronze Metal in the Hammer Throw at the IAAF Seville World Championships. Now the IAAF were telling us to not send this Shot Putter but to send a 100 meter athlete instead. I personally had the task of telling Trevor that he could not go to an event he had been planning to go with his sister who was also competing in the Hammer. I decided that I was going to send the 100 meter athlete and told Trevor that he was my 100 meter athlete. I told him that he would be the highlight and the talk of the Championships and the only thing I told him to be very careful of was to not "False Start!"
I told him I was probably going to revceive a lot of criticism but I did not have the heart to tell the kid that he could not go.
(Just wanted to clarify that you can not go to an IAAF event and then just happen to find out your are not in an event, and then decide to enter an event, it does not work like that. The IAAF is very methodical; meticulous and organized to ever let that happen.)
