State of war : not before 1581
[edit]"It was a separate peace that formally ended the state of war"
There was formally no war between Spain and Netherlands, but a revolt or insurrection of subjects against their prince (duke of Brabant, count of Flanders, etc.).
Only after the secession of the United Provinces (1581 Act of Abjuration) is it possible to use the word "war".
And formally, it was NOT a war against Spain (the Netherlands were not a Spanish colony, they were part of the Holy Empire !). Jcqrcd44 (talk) 13:49, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
