Free Agent vs Kansas City
[edit]Muggsys Trut-h-urts man Hey, I noticed some of the reverts you guys have been making and the note about still saying that Travis is a free agent until his physical is complete, and I was just wondering what the reason was. Is there some sort of sports-related guideline or prescedent that I'm missing here? Thanks. Pishcal (talk) 15:14, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- I can't speak for other sports projects, but WP:BASEBALL waits to update player pages after reported signings until the team confirms the transaction. The team doesn't confirm the signing until the player passes a physical, so 99% of the time that's what we're waiting for. There's a list of transactions that have fallen through kept here, but note that it's far from complete (just kept for examples). The contract for Wood is official now (tweet from the team and official source). Trut-h-urts man (T • C) 15:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Pishcal: At Template talk:Uw-sportstrans, I have documented numerous cases where a deal was reported, but then fell through, many of them due to failed physicals. To quote a great philosopher, "It ain't over till it's over". – Muboshgu (talk) 16:10, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- OK SO... If there's a flood of reports of a new team from sources known to be credible (team site writers etc) it's legit enough to know there's a contract in place. The credible writer will say 'the team has not confirmed' because the team does not issue a press release until the player's papers are filed with MLB Offices. The team and player will have an agreement and a contract signed—a contract that can be VOIDED if he fails the physical. If he fails his physical he should be considered a free agent again then. Once he passes, then team files and issues that press release. Wikipedia wants a player's new team to change only then, once the team itself announces it. You will see it on the team site's Roster>Transactions page. It will take a little bit to update, and usually the team's official twitter is good until then. - I believe that a contract is not signed until a physical is passed. Either way, the contract is not final until the physical is passed, so we wait for the team to make the official announcement/introduction. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:13, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Almost always, there will be a contract signed—so no team can jump in with an offer now, and they can't suddenly ask for more money/years, etc. It will be a contract with a stipulation of being voided with a failed physical. Often other things that could void it too. It's not filed with MLB yet, but it's between the player and team at that point. Muggsys (talk) 18:22, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
