Intro and Maps
[edit]I've added an introduction to provide some context, and moved the maps up because they relate to all transport, not just railways. I guess I ought to find some references to back up what I've put in the intro (though I don't think anything I've written is controversial); I've got some but they're all in French, so I'll try to dig out some others. Portage Railway
[edit]Some of the short isolated railway sections are presumably to bypass unnavigatable streches of the river, these being socalled portage railways.
Many of the rivers are also very wide, and thus very expensive to build bridges for road or rail.
