Palanquin
Planquin in Vedas Vedic text do have reference to planquin and I think it existed long before. Many temples have sculptues which depict planquin. --Aravind Parvatikar 15:26, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
hey i am unable to find any article related to tanga, bugge or victoria can some please guide me. --Aravind Parvatikar 05:47, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Cars
Anyone have actual numbers on which are the most popular car brands? I've guessed Hyundai, Ford and Maruti based on what I've seen on the road, does that seem OK? Arvindn 19:22, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- That is not right. Maruti still has more than 50% share. That is followed by Hyundai and Tata Motors. Then only Ford comes. These links will be useful.

WHETHER RAILWAY BUDGET IS FINAL OR IT IS AMENDABLE AFTER FRESH ELECTIONS...
I WANT TO KNOW WHETHER RAILWAY BUDGET IS FINAL OR IT WILL CHANGE AFTER ANY FRESH ELECTIONS..LIKE CHANGE IN FARE? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.169.90.128 (talk) 12:45, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Why don't you ask that question on Yahoo answers....--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:47, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Dubious
I added a dubious tag to Transport in India#Local Transport.
I completely disagree that roads in Indian cities are bad.
Ever seen rods in cities like Mangalur, Pune, Jabalpur?
They're not bad.
And I'm, not talking about metros and big cities as you people would find fault with my statements.
--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- If you meant Mangalore, I would disagree with you ;-) But saying that roads in all or even most cities are bad is a vague generalisation and it is certainly a dubious statement. I think it shoukld be deleted as it is a POV. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 12:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I mean, what was Mangalore, and is now Mangalur. Yes, saying all roads are bad in India is wrong, esp. since India is ranked No.1 n Asia for roads by Readers Digest. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:42, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I've also added a dubious tag to Line 5: Some 40 percent of villages in India lack access to all-weather roads and remain isolated during the monsoon season.
So, where does USA have that.
As per CMA India, 'all-weather' roads are those which are mostly made of concrete and NOT bituminous or asphalted, which is what most of the USA uses.
--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:09, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Also, The Indian Road Network is under much needed development. seems VERY VERY VERY biased.......... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:10, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Much needed doesn't seem biased to me ;-) but it would probably constitute POV. SBC-YPR (talk) 13:24, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
The statement is not at all accurate. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:38, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
share taxis?
No mention of share taxis here. --Smilo Don (talk) 10:31, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
I'll add some info about it then. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:17, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Citations
I have brought down the number of citations in the article down to 8.... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:33, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I left out one word. I meant, I brought down the citations needed to 8. There are 38 references for this article, almost on par with the Transport in the US article. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:41, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- Down to 5 now :-) SBC-YPR (talk) 12:44, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
In the seconde image ' pre-economically liberalized India '...what kind of citation is needed? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:54, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- Something to suggest that the three modes of transport mentioned in the pic were indeed the most popular ones in pre-liberalised India - probably a newspaper/magazine article will do. SBC-YPR (talk) 10:41, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Pipelines?
Do pipelines constitute a mode of transport? Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 12:57, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- As per the CIA factbook, yes.
--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:20, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
images
are unduely skewed to Mumbai and Delhi. 9 out of 19 images. --Like I Care 14:59, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Just for clarity, here's a state-wise break-up:
- Delhi : 6
- Maharashtra : 4
- Jammu and Kashmir : 2
- Andhra Pradesh : 1
- Gujarat : 1
- Rajasthan : 1
- Tamil Nadu : 1
- Uttar Pradesh : 1
- Uttarakhand : 1
- West Bengal : 1
- Maps, graphs and general images : 3
Any suggestions on improving representation? I'll try and replace a couple of the Delhi and MH images. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 16:24, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Bengaluru, a bit Mumbai, and maybe a little Ahmedabad. ..--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:07, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- we have so many cities, towns and villages in india, I wouldt suggest more than one (the most representative) picture for each place. --Like I Care 13:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'll be in Mumbai Next week, I can get pics of buses, and trains. I live in Bengaluru, no problem woth pics. I already have a handful that I've been waiting to upload to the commons, but keep forgetting to copy from my phone. I will be going to Ahmedabad, so I might be able to get a few shots there too.... Any idea how to move an existing image to the commons?--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:29, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- that is awesome. pls take as many pictures as possible. we have been wanting to have a representative picture of road and rail transoprt in Mumbai. A busy road picture and a shot of the interior of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or any other railway station should be good. Please see Talk:Mumbai#Poll. Moving images to Commons, you might have to individually upload them. --Like I Care 14:13, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Update - I have replaced three existing images on the page, and the revised list of image distribution now looks like this:
- Delhi : 4
- Gujarat : 2
- Jammu and Kashmir : 2
- Maharashtra : 2
- Andhra Pradesh : 1
- Haryana : 1
- Karnataka : 1
- Rajasthan : 1
- Tamil Nadu : 1
- Uttar Pradesh : 1
- Uttarakhand : 1
- West Bengal : 1
- Maps, graphs and general images : 3
A bit more representative now, perhaps. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 14:46, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- I can get a shot of Mumbai Central in the Morning. As for road transport, I'll try and get a few pics that are similar to the ones in use in Mumbai BRTS. I might be able to get some images of Chennai after the 13th of May. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:29, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Mistake....Big mistake... in the Buses section. You put up a pic of a KSRTC Airavat Volvo, but the Airavat isn't a city bus, but an intercity bus, so it should come under long distance transport. I'm leaving the pic there however, but might try and add a ref to it. I'll get a pic of one of the newer buses in Mumbai, and put it up next week and caption it like, " The B.E.S.T (I'll expand it) operates India's oldest bus service in the city of Mumbai. "
--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:18, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Opps, I wanted to take a pic of the bus stop at Hudson Circle, but I forgot, so now I have to wait to go back to Bengaluru on the 5th of May. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:28, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Lead
I have rewritten a part of the lead section to maintain conformity with the guidlines for lead sections. Comments and further improvements are welcome. IMHO, it still has some way to go. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 11:08, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Here's a small suggestion. Don't use Transportation, use Transport. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:44, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Moving ahead..
The article has improved by leaps and bounds over the past month or so - from being a stub having citation needed and expand tags, it's now grown into a voluminous treatise with 62 references (at last count). Now if only we could get it a little more organised, and take care of the cleanup tag, we should be able to push for a good article nomination. Request all hands on board to help take the article to the next level :-) Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:45, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I've done my best at providing refs, but there are many bits I've not included because I don't have a ref for them.....
Did you know that 3/4s of NH4 betw. Hubli and Pune is concrete? I'm now concentrating a bit on Road signs in India as well. I've got quite a few pics, and a bit of refs which I'll add.--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:23, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually this article was NOT a stub when I first edited it on 7 Feb 09. It was 30kb that time, now it is 50kb.--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:14, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Moving On..
It's been a great journey and we've all done our best in bringing up this article from a measly 30k to a whopping 50k, and I feel great. But I think it is time for me to move on, so my further contributions to this article will be limited and I'll instead concentrate more on other related articles and the Hindi translation of this article and it's cat at the commons.
See ya...

enthusiast's edits
If he read the talk page, he would have realised that SBC-YPR removed delhi images as there were too many. agreed that pakistan and bangladesh's transport pages have better images which make the thanjavur bus imge make us look bad, but we shouldn't hide the truth.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:15, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- BTW, the article wasn't badly maintained. SBC-YPR and I got it up from 30kb to 50kb, from 20 refs to 61 refs....taht isn't badly maintained....--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:19, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- He is just interested to push the photographs taken by him. I have not seen any important addition or referencing in his changes. Also, he made bogus changes copying from Pakistan article on same topic. I reverted it a number of times, and he re-added without looking into changes. Finally, when I threatened to report to admins unless he fixes his changes, then he fixed it. I think that the Thanjavur image should be put back in as it does give true picture of transport in major part of India, not rosy pictures of Gurgaon highway (let that be there too, but its not all great about Transport in India). He also tried to remove some referenced comparison with Transport of BRIC countries, and he had put it back as I insisted to do so. I guess this is how the majority of new editors will be like, unless some people try to educate them about what WP stands for, or in some other way awareness about it is created in India.--GDibyendu (talk) 17:02, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
I was very hurt by his statements. I don't know about SBC-YPR, but if I were him, I would feel upset. On your talk page he said " just putting images properly because the article seemed badly maintained". I feel hurt because SBC-YPR, and I did a LOT of work for this article. I didn't do as much as sbc-YPR. And to his other comment.... 'But can you please stop threatening me, we are no longer in school" What threats? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:39, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- That I would report to admins unless he fixes texts that he added such as 'Benazir Bhutto International Airport' (Bangalore) etc. :) --GDibyendu (talk) 10:09, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi I guess i have caused much trouble in this article. Srikant the article is not at all badly maintained, I meant that the format was a little odd and i thought of making it neater by putting all the images on one side of the page. And please feel assured that im not "trying to push" photos taken by me cz i havnt taken them. They are mostly flickr uploads. And btw i only have 2 of my pics here which is not very big number. If we ought to show both sides of the coin then i would like to put forward the proposal of removing one of the radio taxi images and putting an image of one of the amby or fiat cabs that are widely used in cal, delhi and mumbai. Im really sorry if i hurt or did upset anybody with my statement. I was misunderstood i was trying to say that i wanted to change the format. Srikant if you want a pic of an overcrowded bus im fine with it, but i have changed the indore bus image with the delhi brt image. Btw the indore bus was mine and delhi one was uploaded by some other user. If any body can find a pic of the widely used old taxi cabs please change it with one of the radio taxi ones. But well all i wanted to do was show India rather than bharat which still uses primitive means of transport. Well if you look at most articles they show the good points and write about the good points of the country. Read an article about china it wouldnt say the glass is half empty but say its half full. Obviously we Indians tend to be show our worst sides. All i was saying was show shining India instead of the lagging behind bharat. And Im not the only Wiki user trying to do that, see the articles of the US, China, Russia - we all have flaws but we try to hide them. Do we go to our boss and say oh i suck at stocks, i did MBA cz i wanted to earn money now i have realised im pathetic - u wld no longer be a investment banker for long. No one says we are bad at we do and none of the articles criticize their country and thus i wanted an image of the modern India.
Is it important to have an image of a truck being transported by rail in the rail long range section??. I reckon the local transport section should be called rapid transit it means all forms of rail transport including tram, monorail, metro, lrt etc. I was not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, i am really sorry if i did so. I would also think that it is worth mentioning that we should work together in making this and many more india related articles into featured ones and to achieve that we MUST WORK TOGETHER!!--Enthusiast10 (talk) 11:12, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Once you are working in WP for longer time, you'll understand why a balanced view is necessary. Also, how many China or Russia articles are FA or GA? less than half of India related article. There is no point in comparing with Projects which are lagging behind us. Also, just because others are hiding true facts, we do not have follow them. And WP is an encyclopedia and its not a place where we have to show how and why our stuffs are better than theirs. It is our responsibility to provide neutral pictures.--GDibyendu (talk) 13:44, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Point Taken. Thanks for your insight. But only one thing, we are not hiding that 90% use buses in India but why not show a pic of a modern new bus rather than an overcrowded bus.--Enthusiast10 (talk) 15:50, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- There is one pic in Bus section that shows Delhi buses, which seem modern enough. As for really 'modern' ones, say like Volvo buses in Bangalore, cause high pollution (I believe so as I have seen the emitted smoke many times) - but getting a ref for that will be difficult.--GDibyendu (talk) 17:21, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't mean take the article back to the ancient times. Kepp both, the old and new.
And enough of Delhi pictures, read the section titled images on thop of the page. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:27, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- I couldnt agree more, the rajpath image is not neccessary at all we can substitute it with an image from some other part of india. Can we make a to-do list so that we can work on the article and know where we are lagging behind and work of those aspects and try and make this article into a featured one. thanks --Enthusiast10 (talk) 12:48, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Volvos emit smoke only in 2 cases: either there is too much moisture around the exhaust, mostly water logged roads, or if they are badly maintained...... that's what happens in bengaluru atleast... For the section titled rail, that would be better. also, rolling highay is a form of train transport, not road transport..... once again stop with the delhi imges.
also, the list amd pics of airports were REMOVED for a reson, from NOW ON< IF YOU HAVE TO EDIT THEI PAGE< PLEASE READ THE TALK PAGE AND THE THE HISTORY FOR UPTO 500 EDITS, BEFORE EDITING IT --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:19, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
ONE MORE POINT: DO NOT use the word Transportation. If you lookup differences between American and British English, you'd know that Transportation in BrE is used to refer to inmates being shifted to prisons, in Indian English, Transport corresponds to Parivahan, while -ation corresponds to Yatayat, which is the Verb form, while Parivahan is the noun, which we are using here. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:23, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- I put a delhi image in the brt section bcz it represents a brt best as compared to other pics of other brts like pune. Wiki doesnt have very good images of pune brt thus i was using one of delhi. The delhi one shows segregated lanes and everything so therefore i THOUGHT IT WAS MORE SUITABLE. And i didnt even put the rolling highway image and the image was never in the road transport section. So please check the page before accusing me. Im trying to bury the hatchet but obviously none of the users on this page wants to work together to make this article a featured one.Srikant i wld have like what yr views were on making a to-do list bt you prefer to criticize my edits (sme of which i have not done) rather than comment on making a to do list.--Enthusiast10 (talk) 07:28, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- You said 'Is it important to have an image of a truck being transported by rail in the rail long range section??' I said YES. I piut it there. I am NOT accusing you of anything..... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:37, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- Oh Im sorry i misunderstood, I was saying why are we puttin an image of rolling highway what about the heritage trains lke the ones in Nilgiri and Darjeeling- they are UNESCO WHS sites. --Enthusiast10 (talk) 10:56, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
why don't you tyhem then?--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:04, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
AND one other thing..... NO MATTER WHAT....... Bharat will always be more developed than India to me..... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:45, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
हिन्दी
I have created the Hindi page with all the sections present in the English one. I'm currently in the process of translating information to Hindi.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:23, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
TODO: before going for GA
- Merchant Marine: Can someone please add some info from here? It seems to be reviewed in 2009. --GDibyendu (talk) 17:03, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Done I've added information from that as well as the official SCI website. Does "Merchant Marine" need to be reworded? Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 13:26, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Probably name should be changed. How about "Shipping"? Also, another possibility is to keep this as main text of 'Water and sea transport' section, putting current main text to 'Ports' subsection and keeping 'Waterways' subsection as it is.--GDibyendu (talk) 14:01, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Done I've moved the text around, and the section now reads more coherently. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:39, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Heliports: needs some expansion. At least 3 sentences. Done
- Airports: data updation needed. Done
- 2 dubious tag to address.
- 2 citation needed to address. Done
- moving links in see also to a template on Transport in India. Done
Once this is done, we should go for GA.
Later, we can also look into this:
- red-links
- harvnb notations
- lead review
Your comments and suggestions on this are welcome! Also, by 15th we should move this out of INCOTM to let other nominations a chance. Those of us, who are working on this article, are expected to linger on, so that it can be FA oneday. Thanks.--GDibyendu (talk) 19:18, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
- Heliports: I just wrote an email to the DGCA requesting for more information.
- Dubious: You'll find the reason for them in the talk page archives.
- Citations, the scorpio one, I'll try and find info. the CSIAM one, probably got lost in the mix up during enthusiast's edits, I'll put them back.
- Moving links, I had suggested this to SBC-YPR, but I don't think he has thought much further about it.
What are harvnb notations? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:51, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Harvnb is a template for citations. See Mumbai article for example. References section will have a list of cite books, and refs will use harvnb|last|first|year|pageNum and Notes section will show (along with other refs like cite web etc.) reflinks such as 'last year, p.pageNum', and that reflink will point to the respective book details in references section.--GDibyendu (talk) 14:01, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Done the airports citation part. Heliports might take almost a week. The dubious tag has been added to wat can be considered outdated data. To tell the truth, IMHO, the NDA and UPA governments have done a lot to improve the quality of roads.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:25, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Taken care of one of the dubious tags (Please check). Ideally, lead being a summary of rest of the article, we should put back this with some detail in roads section. And that detail could be updated data (rural connectivity improvement). But, I could not decipher much on that from the reports in PMGSY websites. Please see if you can.--GDibyendu (talk) 18:25, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have moved that info to the roads section, as it created a discontinuity in the lead. Also, the unreferenced statement about the top SUV has been deleted - I think this really adds no value to the article, and is also unstable as it is bound to keep changing. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:42, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Great. We just have to take care of one dubious flag now.--GDibyendu (talk) 18:27, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- The dubious flags are mainy there just because the refs were a tad too old for today. Also, don't you think that Transparency Estimation is 11 yrs too old? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:37, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
I feel the table in the Airports section could be reorganised into a better-looking one, like what we have for roads. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:50, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I split it in two to avoid scrolling, feel free to change it into a table. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:21, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
How exctly do you apply for GA? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:07, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Start from WP:GAN.--GDibyendu (talk) 12:31, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- okay thanks a lot... one more thing, i suggest, atleast for this article...make sure that all refs have a name ref name="xxx" types.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:41, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Why? If they are not reused, no use to put a name!--GDibyendu (talk) 16:25, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Guilty as charged :D
I've created it now - do have a look and keep updating it as necessary. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 13:29, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
YAY!!! Mind if I change the colours? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:57, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Not at all - go right ahead and make it nice and colourful! :) Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 10:50, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Also, need to add it in the other linked articles.--GDibyendu (talk) 15:13, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
No problem sir, leave it to me, it shall be done in less than 5 minutes... --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:34, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Done, except in two articles as India is just a section in it. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:41, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Images again....
Enthusiast once again added ANOTHER picture of Delhi Metro to this article. Can anybody get one of the Kolkata Metro, OR should I upload one of the construction of the Namma Metro? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:21, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- I've cleaned up the image organisation, and deleted two repetitive images. I don't think it would be a good idea to add any more images to the article - there are too many already, and any further images will only clutter up the article. I propose that any image added henceforth should be a replacement of an existing image. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 08:44, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- Unless, it comes under a new section.. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 08:46, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Can we add File:Lavasa Helipad.jpg to the heliports section ?? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:51, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Suggestion: More sections and data
Nice work by the authors of the article. I believe that adding a section on Jurisdiction : Departments etc . will be useful. Also, more statistics on passenger/freight miles , accidents and historical milestones is needed. Vinay84 (talk) 07:57, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Expressways only 200km????
This data is probably around 4-5 years old. The expressways length today should be between 650-1,000km.
If the given data is correct, then someone please correct the data on Indian Expressways. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goodboy2009 (talk • contribs) 09:51, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it is very old information, if u have any reference that says its has length of ~1000km then update it. I tried googling but no luck KuwarOnline Talk 09:04, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Roads are metalled?
The road subsection says "All national highways are metalled,.....". Shouldn't that be "sealed" or somesuch? If you click on that link you can see that Metalling is defined as "The term road metal refers to the broken stone or cinders used in the construction or repair of roads.....". Flood of images
The recent flood of images by User:Enthusiast10 is ruining the look of the article. Please reduce the amount of images used. It makes it look like cheap newspaper article. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:09, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
