"No accent" ?? (Under language)
[edit]I'm no sociolinguist, but isn't the claim that the Tourangeaux (or anyone) speak French "devoid of any accent" naive? Sure some people believe they have no accent, but they're deluded. Can some linguist rewrite this pls? Coughinink 15:00, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Hey buddy do the research then post a solution. Like you said you are not a linguist, just a guy with a comment
- Hello there. I live in Tours and we are said to have no accent, and we pretend it. In fact, as everyone, we have an accent. But the way of speaking french in Touraine is considered as the main way. We you learn french, you learn the way to speak in Touraine, not the way to speak in Calais or Marseille. Désolé si ce n'est pas très clair. En gros, il y a bien un accent tourangeau, mais il est considéré comme l'accent standard du français. FreD 16:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
It is considered as the purest french (standard one as FreD says) due to the presence of several great kings in this area during the french "Renaissance" period approximatively from XIV'th to XVI'th centuries. Touraine was the heart of their kingdom and also their favorite place for hunting and climate as great castles of Loire attest it. Following kings established definitively in Paris. - Actual examples should be given of the dialects of Tour and Paris. The reader can judge for himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.147.175.160 (talk) 15:52, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
How to Pronounce?
[edit]French pronunciation is inscrutable to me. Could someone add this?
- in IPA, i think you should wrote it tuя, but i'm not sure. try to pronounce it as toorh... FreD 16:53, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Nice place
[edit]Not relevant to this article, but I went to Tours in 2006 and I thought it was a great place, I'd love to go back again. Mglovesfun 14:40, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
English Translation
[edit]I would like to improve the article by copy-editing some of the English text. Mikeo1938 (talk) 23:02, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I've made a start but there is still a lot to do. Perhaps the existing text was generated by a machine translation program ... (?) Mikeo1938 (talk) 15:35, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Mosque reference
[edit]69.255.89.223 (talk) at 09:05, 14 December 2008
added a line and reference about plans to build a mosque. The website referenced to is that of the British National Party. I was unable to find a more objective source for this. I think the passage should be rephrased (with a credible source) or removed. Ideas? 82.170.157.29 (talk) 23:11, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
What is missing from the recently created city timeline article? Please add relevant content! Contributions welcome. Thank you. -- M2545 (talk) 17:27, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
Requested move 3 September 2018

The result of the move request was: Not moved. As pointed out in the discussion, the comparison with Wells is not apples–apples. While there are many places named "Wells" and it's also a common surname, there are only three uses of "Tours" on the Tour disambiguation – Professional golf tours, which is a partial-title match, the primary topic, and a football club named after the primary topic. The French places named "Tours-something" are listed on the La Tour disambiguation. – wbm1058 (talk) 19:55, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
Tours → Tours, France – WP:ASTONISH, see Talk:Wells, Somerset#Requested move. Note that the category is at Category:Tours, France per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2011 July 14#Category:Tours and the Commons category at Commons:Category:Tours (France) with Commons:Category:Tours for electronic media. I suggest "Tours" becomes a DAB and it can also list meanings such as those at fr:Tours (homonymie) such as Tours, Texas and the places in France with a suffix. However a DAB at "Tours" might end up duplicating a lot of things so maybe it should be a combined DAB at Tour. Crouch, Swale (talk) 13:00, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Support - I think the dab should be included in Tour with the lead changed to "Tour or Tours may refer to:". --Gonnym (talk) 13:30, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

- Symbolic oppose per WP:NWFCTM – I don't see evidence that anything is broken. Tours is a mid-sized city of significant historical importance (Battle, Cathedral), and it does not even have an important encyclopedic article at Tour (disambiguation) to compete with. WP:PLURALPT instructs to evaluate importance of singular and plural separately, I can't imagine anyone typing "tours" but not looking for the city (and even if such readers exist, they are one click away from the dab page). And I ain't gonna help fixing ~2500 incoming links for the city this time. No such user (talk) 11:29, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Also, even if one takes into account the WP:PTMs in France, the largest of those, Tours-sur-Marne, has population of 1200. Hamlet of Tours, Texas is a redlink not even mentioned in West, Texas. Astonished as one may be, there is simply no other article competing for the primary topic here, and we would be doing a disservice to readers and editors alike if we perform this move. No such user (talk) 11:38, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Well isn't a specific article but Wells is a DAB. Maybe at some point a broad concept article will be written but I still think they are valid uses of Tour(s). Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:21, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- But that's a false equivalence – I see some 20 cities called "Wells" and hundreds of people listed at Wells (name); I agree that the Somerset city is not the PTOPIC among them all. I don't see anything nearly comparable for "Tours", not even people with such surname. No such user (talk) 15:14, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

- Oppose. This is clearly the primary encyclopedic topic of the word "Tours".... Dohn joe (talk) 18:06, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose. The city is the primary topic for the word "Tours". We don't even have another article by this name, so the current hatnote works just fine. Bradv 05:21, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

- Oppose. Since there is no article at tour, it's just a disambiguation page. What's more, who would link "tours" and expect it to go anywhere else? Who would search for "tours" and expect something else? It doesn't really seem astonishing. A "tour of duty" is a tour of duty and nobody would expect/search for it any other way. 216.8.184.122 (talk) 13:10, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:NOTADICT. There is no policy basis for this proposal (WP:ASTONISH does not qualify - it's not a criteria we consider at WP:AT, much less anything to mitigate WP:PRIMARYTOPIC criteria). --В²C ☎ 00:26, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
