My father was the headmaster of Somerville High School and as a young teen in the late forties I accompanied him to watch Toni Lavelli lead the school to many victories. A local hero, Tony went on to Yale where he again gained fame on the court and then to the NBA. A Life magazine cover article highlighted his over the head walk away mid court hoop shot and his musical talents. If I recall correctly, he dated and may have married (?) a famous opera star while living in NYC. While basketball brought him fame, it appears his real interest was music and composing. As a reporter for our high school publication, I had the honor of interviewing him at his parent’s house in Somerville. Great memories.
