Move proposal

[edit]

I think Tom Jones (singer) is definitely the primary topic here, so I propose to move this to Tom Jones (disambiguation) and move the former article to this title, linking to the dab by use of {{otherpersons}}. Any objections? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:14, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. The singer is probably more notable than any other individual, but he is not more notable than all of the others pt together. Placing the singer as the primary topic would therefore directly impede more readers than it would help, an it would indirectly impede many more: if the dab page ceases to be at prime slot, it will no longer be possible to disambiguate incoming links by using popups, or even to continue to use bots to identify those links which need to be dismabiguated. That impedes maintenance, and makes it more likely that links to other ppl call Tom Jones will incorrectly point to the singer. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:32, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Absolutley ridiculous that this doesn't go to the singer. He is definitely the most famous of that list by far, and the idea that you can add together the other people's famousness to supercede his is quite bizarre logic indeed. Wikipedia is for readers, most of which will want the singer, or if not, will at least understand why he takes the spot of 'Tom Jones' and will settle for a little extra time taken in those cases. Any technical reasons why this can't be done should come a very distant second to not wasting the time of the readers who are looking for the singer, who are currently forced to waste time picking him out of that list (as any scientist will tell you, the human eye does not automatically navigate to the top entry, and as any British person will tell you, the average non-UK based reader has no idea that Tom Jones is Welsh, or even what Welsh means (c.f. Katherine Jenkins on Dancing with the Stars right now), so that is also likely another cause of delay. And as an aside, if it must be considered, in terms of not wasting editor time, I find it completely implausible that there is anyone out there who will be writing about a Tom Jones while not being aware of the singer. Who is this mythical person who is completey unaware of one of the most famous singers of the 20th Century? All of those editors infact would be aware of him, and therefore would indeed be checking their work first to find out what the correct link is for their particular Tom Jones. The people who won't check are the people who rightly assume that Tom Jones is occupied by the most famous Tom Jones. Krismeadon (talk) 15:33, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Tom Jones (singer) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 22:58, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is one Tom Jones

[edit]

Why isn't this automatically redirected to Tom Jones (singer)? You make it really hard to look for. It's plain stupid. --Fluence (talk) 01:01, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Fluence: For literate people, The History of Tom Jones, an important work of literature, trumps a modern pop singer by far. Equinox 16:02, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not that anyone is suggesting you are illiterate, Fluence. 86.187.174.149 (talk) 19:37, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
